“Upper East Side Girls Who Just Don’t Care,” Backstage At Peter Som-------
“Everything has a little twist,” makeup artist Tom Pecheux said of Peter Som’s collection this morning at Milk Studios. Backstage, he was hard at work creating a look loaded with dichotomies. “It’s grown up but very playful,” he said, adding that he was going for “femininity with a touch of craziness” achieved through the implementation of one of Fall’s favorite makeup elements, metallics. “Metallics could and should be a big trend this season,” Pecheux noted as he dusted a mixture of MAC Pigment in Silver Dusk, Rose Gold, Silver, and Melon high on models’ cheekbones on top of a blend of its Powder Blush in Pink Swoon and Peachykeen. Keeping eyes completely neutral by dabbing on a concealer to even out tone, Pecheux focused most of his attention on models’ mouths. “Peter asked for a frosted lip, and at first I wasn’t sure,” the makeup artist admitted of the retro style. “But I updated it.” How? By dipping into the same amalgam of pigments he used for the cheeks and placing it on top of a slick of MAC Lipstick in Runaway Red. The result: a completely copper pout (there’s that twist).
Riffing on Pecheux’s feminine-but-crazy motif, Wella Professionals celebrity colorist Aura Friedman showed up backstage packing ombré-dyed extensions for tresses that had a “wild woman goes suburban housewife” quality. “It looks like an old dye job,” Wella global creative director Eugene Souleiman concurred of the darker-at-the-roots, lighter-through-the-lengths strands, which he set to sculpting into a fifties/sixties, Hitchcock heroine, half-up bouffant. Coating hair in Wella’s Ocean Spritz for texture, he applied heat before creating a side part and teasing with a soft-bristled brush for a slightly “raw” effect, as requested by Som. Souleiman then pulled up the top section and pinned it down haphazardly in the back. “They look like an expensive gang of Upper East Side girls who just don’t care,” Souleiman surmised of the result. Blake, Leighton, eat your hearts out.
