Floral Fragrance, Five Ways

Maybe it’s the fact that the temperature in New York is expected to climb into the seventies today or that April’s blooms are making their first appearance, but spring is finally in the air—and so too is our seasonal lust for floral fragrances. While we’re typically devotees of rich gourmands and heady orientals, it’s rose and violet, jasmine and honeysuckle, gardenia and lily that we find ourselves in the mood for these days. You too? Here, our top five picks for perfect petal essences.

Chloé Eau de Parfum, Rosebud Edition

An oldie but a goodie, Chloé’s signature scent—which features notes of pink peony, freesia, magnolia flower, lily of the valley, and rose—has gotten a mini makeover for spring courtesy of a festive, limited-edition pink ribbon. It’s the little things that excite us.

Hermès Un Jardin Sur Le Toit

The fourth flacon in Hermès’ Un Jardin series (previous scents were inspired by the Mediterranean, the Nile, and India), Sur Le Toit takes its sensory cues from a garden much closer to home: the one on the roof of the brand’s Parisian flagship. Its blooming magnolia, apple, and pear trees result in a luscious, fruit-tinged floral.

Bulgari Mon Jasmin Noir

Though Bulgari’s latest scent is designed to be a lighter take on its original Jasmin Noir, there’s nothing delicate about this new adaptation, which features a sultry blend of jasmine, lily of the valley, and wood notes. Think of it as an unabashedly feminine fragrance designed to roar, not whimper, on the skin. (There’s a lion seated next to a nearly naked Kirsten Dunst in the print ad, after all.)

Flora by Gucci Eau Fraiche

Eau Fraiche is, as the name implies, a fresher interpretation of the original Flora by Gucci, but its fruitiness—thanks to a dose of zesty kumquat—balances out a floral heart of rose and osmanthus. If you who prefer your floral scents to be of the lush, juicy variety, this eau is for you.

Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb La Vie en Rose

Fans of V&R’s signature scent will delight in this limited-edition version, which is a lighter, fizzier incarnation of the original. The titular rose remains at the heart of this latest Flowerbomb, along with notes of sweet lily of the valley, citrusy tangerine, and elegant amber. The effect is more sparkler than grenade, but it’s still explosive.
