Chantecaille’s Summer Skin Mixer

Shocking as this may sound, I discovered foundation four months ago. I obviously always knew it was out there and have test-driven countless formulas during my tenure as a beauty editor, but in my personal life—that Brooklyn existence, where lace-less Keds replace ankle-breaking wedges—I’ve never been a huge fan (read: I never really needed it). With age comes a whole new host of beauty concerns, though, including blotchiness and increased pigmentation. And just like that, a plain old tinted moisturizer isn’t enough. The transition hasn’t been an easy one, as even the lightest of formulas still feels too heavy for me. So I’ve taken matters into my own hands and developed a habit of thinning my favorite complexion correctors with fluid sunscreens, which protect my skin from the summer sun and boast a liquid-y consistency that helps create the perfect cross between a tinted moisturizer and an actual foundation.

My latest mixer of choice is Chantecaille’s new Ultra Sun Protection SPF 50 PA+++, which does way more than just help build the perfect base. Billed as a primer, you could put this oil-free, broad-spectrum UV fighter on under your makeup, but a DIY blend is the best way to go, as far as I’m concerned. Loaded with three non-chalky sunscreens that block more deeply damaging UVA rays, it’s also packed with potent antioxidants like cherry blossom, lemon balm, and white tea extracts to help fight off free radicals. Its real selling point is carnosine, a natural ingredient that prevents collagen from breaking down so skin stays plump—and protected from the elements. An amazing rosewater scent makes you that much more excited to slather this one on in the morning.
