Since heading out on her “don’t call it a comeback” comeback tour last year, Lauryn Hill has made a few things clear as far as her stage presence is concerned. First and foremost, the former Fugees front woman will not be held to such trivialities as set times—she’ll go on when she’s ready, thanks. The second thing that’s essential to Hill’s live show is that she’s all in when it comes to hair and makeup. The past six months have seen Ms. Hill with thick, heavy bangs, teased-out afros, metallic green lids, purple lips, and neon yellow nails. This weekend, at the inaugural L.A. Rising Music Festival, she hit her stride. Sporting a free-flowing, relaxed bob, Hill took to the stage with royal blue eye shadow dusted all the way up to her brow bone, which she paired with a matte chocolate lip, à la Pat McGrath’s pout backstage at Loewe’s Fall show. We’ve always struggled with bold shadows—what do you wear them with, and how much pigment is too much? But Hill seems unfazed by these petty details, as per usual.
