Japan Fashion Week Gets A Makeover For Spring

Seven months ago, it wasn’t clear if there would be a Spring 2012 Japan Fashion Week. In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that befell the region in March, several of the country’s major production factories were impacted and the Fall 2011 shows were cancelled. But the biannual event that takes place in Tokyo didn’t just survive the disaster, it’s thriving. Last week, JFW came back stronger than ever with a new name (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo) and a new major sponsor (Maybelline New York, which signed a three-year contract). Backstage, we spotted a handful of trends that should already be familiar to faithful readers of this blog (think: nude nails and wet hair), but the city lived up to its envelope-pushing reputation with an equal number of edgy looks. Here, some of our favorite beauty moments from the festivities.
