Scents, And Sensible Gifting

With the Paris shows officially over and done with, we are leaving the City of Light today with only a few regrets—not buying that second winter coat from Sandro (stupid!) and sleeping through the good, morning hours at Porte de Cligancourt on Sunday, among them. Failing to make it to Astier de Villatte also ranks up there on the top of the list. The ceramic studio turned hot bed for all manner of beautiful stationery and a certain cult-favorite dish soap, Ivan Pericoli and Benoît Astier de Villatte’s shop on Rue Saint-Honoré expanded into the wild world of fragrance three years ago with the help of their associate Emilie Mazeaud and perfumer Françoise Caron, debuting a gorgeous collection of well-thought-out perfumes, oils, incense, and incredibly innovative scented erasers, which make a fantastic gift for the sketch artist in your life. Fans of the brand increasingly visit the store for its range of aromatic candles, though, which are meant to capture the essence of a specific destination through scent. Their latest releases include Quebec, which features hints of Amerindian incense, a.k.a. “sweet grass” in homage to the Canadian city’s quaint country homes and secret gardens; Yakushima, an ode to the rain forest island off the coast of Japan that’s meant to smell like its lush foliage of cedar tress, rare moss, and wild azaleas; Zermatt, an alpine berry assemblage inspired by the snowy Swiss ski destination; Cabourg, which is laden with the wisteria and jasmine that inspired Proust during his stay at the seaside resort in Normandy; and Broadway, a caramel-y, effervescent offering that bears a close resemblance to cola, that quintessentially American beverage. Luckily for us, all five will debut at Barneys this month—which means speed-shopping through Charles de Gaulle in search of some last-minute souvenirs from abroad will not be necessary.
