Gothams’ City

-------

When the flashbulbs started to pop at Cipriani Wall Street last night, the Hollywood awards season officially got under way. The Oscars might be three months in the future, but the euphoria Calvin Klein sponsored IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards can often be an indicator of what’s to come on much bigger stages. The evening’s roster of nominees have already started generating their fair share of Academy Award buzz, to be sure. “My first movie was recognized well and to be recognized for it is very unreal,” a Valentino-clad Elizabeth Olsen said of her Best Breakthrough Actor mention for Martha Marcy May Marlene. Olsen had some stiff competition in the category from The Descendants‘ Shailene Woodley and newly named Dolce & Gabbana The Makeup face Felicity Jones, who ultimately took home the statuette for her film Like Crazy wearing Proenza Schouler. “It’s completely abstract to my existence,” Jones said when the thought that she could be on her way to Oscar gold crossed her mind. “We’ll see what happens.”

The night’s main event was the euphoria Calvin Klein female Career Tribute Award, which was presented to Charlize Theron by her Young Adult co-star Patton Oswalt. “She is an advanced actor,” Oswalt said of the statuesque South African who he swears is as normal as they come. “I’ve seen her eat pizza and drink beer,” Oswalt joked in front of a crowd that included fellow screen stealers like Tilda Swinton and Vera Farmiga. After Theron made her way to the stage in a plunging-neck Spring Gucci frock, she spoke of how lucky she has been in her career and the amazing opportunities she has been given along the way. But mostly, she seemed to be sending a message to the Olsens, Woodleys, and Joneses of the world. “Make sure that this is really what you love to do, because there’s nothing better than finding something that makes you feel good and creatively stirs you up. It’s the greatest gift in life.”
