Nail Art, The Book

December 2, 2011  6:25 pm

And so the Basel beauty boom continues. Hot on the heels of BLK DNM’s fragrance launch at the Webster on Wednesday and Dior’s debut of its Anselym Reyle-designed makeup collection last night, Chicago-based artist Dzine is hosting a party tomorrow to celebrate Imperial Nails, his site-specific installation and pop-up nail salon at The Standard, Miami Beach. We were first acquainted with the multimedia artist and his obsession with nail art culture this past summer when Imperial Nails made its first run at Salon 94 Freemans Gallery in New York. A corresponding manicure salon was erected in the nearby New Museum’s store lobby, where a revolving cast of local nail artists could be seen, well, making art on the fingertips of those lucky enough to score an appointment. We imagine the Miami version of the performance piece-turned-soirée will operate in a similar manner, but there will be one noted exception: Nailed: A History of Nail Culture and Dzine (The Standard Prese / Damiani Editore, 2012), the artist’s hardback coffee-table book, is getting a special preview at the event. Meant as a historical record of nail art’s cultural ascendance, the 232-page tome features images and submissions from Paper agazine co-founder Kim Hastreiter, artist Luis Gispert, photographer Yasumasa Yonehara, 3-D painter Mickalene Thomas, visual artist Jamel Shabazz, and graffiti artist Fab 5 Freddy, along with gorgeous examples of amateur and professional tips of the crazier-the-better variety. To make up for the fact that we’re not in Miami (have we mentioned that we’re salty about that yet?), we’ve finagled our very own sneak peek at the book, which we’re premiering right here, right now. If only we could simulate the experience of viewing the glossy pictures in 78-degree sunshine…

Imperial Nails presented by Perrier will be open for public appointments from December 10 through December 18 on Saturdays and Sundays at The Standard Spa Miami Beach, 40 Island Ave., Miami Beach, Fla., (305) 673-1717, www.standardhotels.com.
