The 411: Violette Nails’ Helena Komarova

When it comes to the proliferation of nail salons, Milan may not have caught up to New York just yet. But the city definitely has at least one mani/pedi spot that could be deemed destination-worthy. Enter the romantically named (and outfitted) Violette Nails Room. Opened four years ago by Russian-born makeup artist Helena Komarova (her work has appeared in Vogue Italia, Russian Glamour, and L’Officiel), the petite atelier is inspired by Komarova’s favorite bloom and fragrance and is decked out in vintage furniture finds and, fittingly, plenty of violet-hued accoutrements. It’s a frequent stop for the well-heeled masses (Margherita Missoni and Carine Roitfeld are fans), particularly this time of year, when the style set descends upon Italy’s fashion capital. And even though Komarova is beyond busy this week—she has been a member of Pat McGrath’s local backstage beauty team for six years, painting faces at shows like Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Gucci, et al.—she still found time to share some of her favorite local beauty bets below.
The Home Away From Home: Antica Locanda Solferino
“Antica Locanda is in the heart of the Brera, an art district with lots of wonderfully authentic restaurants nearby, and the small hotel is the real Milanese style.”

The Milanese Makeup Staple: Madina
“When you’re in Milano, you have to stock up on Madina at their store. They have a very good new line called Revolution. I particularly love the Blush Sublime Touch and the Spot Light Chic & Shine N1.”

The Hometown Hair Hero: Pier Giuseppe Moroni
“Pier Giuseppe is a good friend of mine and a fantastic hairstylist. His salon is also in the city’s best shopping district.”

The Relaxation Destination: Violette Nails Room
“To be honest, I don’t just get my manicures at Violette, but also my massages. My team is trained very well and we offer all types of massage techniques, anywhere from ten minutes to two hours.”

The Choice Chow: La Latteria
“In my humble opinion, the best, most authentic Italian food in the city.”

The Chic Boutique: Antonioli
“I am literally incapable of visiting this store without walking out having bought something.”

The Easy Escape: Lake Como
“It’s close enough to visit for the weekend, but it feels like a million miles away. It’s a great place to get some fresh air and relax. And from the Villa Serbelloni, you can enjoy an amazing view.”
