Jessica Stam Embraces The Dark Arts
Fall’s severe brunette dye job appears to have legs off the runway—and we can’t say we’re surprised. Jessica Stam is the latest cover girl to go dark, debuting her new color—and cut (the model also sheared off her shoulder-grazing flaxen locks in favor of a dark espresso bob)—at last night’s Asia Society gala in New York. So why the sudden about-face on fashion’s long-standing fascination with platinum blond? “It’s an old thing to say that winter is dark [and spring is light],” Guido Palau surmised in Paris when we pressed the Redken creative consultant on his recent preference for brunettes. Instead, Palau mentioned the undeniable effect of Rooney Mara, the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star whose bangs and ebony crop seemed to influence much of what went on at the Fall shows. But only insofar as her red-carpet appearances have helped proliferate the idea of a new, tough kind of beauty. “It takes someone like that to come along and change things.” What do you think of Stam as the latest member of team chestnut brown?
