Beauty Nostalgia: Reminiscing With…Rachel Roy
Beauty Nostalgia is a new, weekly column on Beauty Counter in which we ask influencers, tastemakers, and some of our favorite industry experts to wax poetic on the sticks, salves, and sprays that helped shape who they are today.
The Pro: Rachel Roy, fashion designer.
The Product: “My mother was a very sweet, graceful, and quiet woman. Fashion was not her thing but she used to wear Chanel No. 5 perfume, and that was the chicest thing about her. When my parents met, she was this beautiful Dutch woman dating this charismatic Indian man. Then she got a job as a computer programmer for the navy, and she had to transform her look into a more conservative style. I remember watching her put on her makeup and doing her hair, and then when she was going out with my dad or her friends, she would dab on Chanel No. 5 for special occasions. Now I realize how similar I am to her, because I wear the same perfume mixed with a bit of Jo Malone Red Roses. The Chanel No. 5 brings back so many memories of her, and I see that it was her way of giving me a reason to dream beyond what I was born into.”
