The Quandary: I feel incredibly self-conscious stripping down for a bikini wax. Is there any way to make the experience less uncomfortable?

The Expert in Residence: Amy Tice, aesthetician at Stark Waxing Studio

The Advice: “The first appointment is always the most awkward. Try coming a few minutes early so you can chat with your aesthetician before stripping down; it’s like breaking the ice and it can put your mind at ease. I find that the disposable underwear, while definitely small, does provide some level of discretion for clients. Beyond that, it’s all about the art of distraction. Lots of girls use the opportunity of a waxing session to get caught up on e-mails, return texts, or get to the next level of Angry Birds—don’t worry, you won’t offend us. If it makes you feel more comfortable, it’s fine to drape a sheet over yourself, so you don’t have to witness every step of the process. Just keep in mind that it can’t get in the way of the wax. Lastly, bring an iPod to your visit. Your aesthetician might be able to plug it into speakers in the room or you can simply insert the earbuds and focus on Mozart or Adele rather than the wax!”
