Beauty Nostalgia: Reminiscing With…India Hicks

Beauty Nostalgia is a new, weekly column on Beauty Counter in which we ask influencers, tastemakers, and some of our favorite industry experts to wax poetic on the sticks, salves, and sprays that helped shape who they are today.

The Pro: India Hicks, author and designer

The Product: “My father was a great designer in the sixties and he designed everything around him—even my mother’s hairstyle. She wore a very large bouffant, which she has maintained ever since, and it involved clouds and clouds of Elnett hair spray. Growing up, that smell was always around me. It’s very distinctive and crisp, not too powdery or sticky sweet. I remember walking into her room and seeing her getting ready with the Elnett in hand. My mother is incredibly minimal and never had to do much to her look. So the only beauty products that were about the house were the cans of Elnett. In fact, I always assumed the lady on the can was my mother. I was so disappointed when I discovered at age 10 or 11 that it wasn’t her! Later, when I started modeling, it was the only thing hairdressers would use on photo shoots, and even today, I style my hair low-key with nothing else but a mist of the same [can].” —As told to Kari Molvar
