Nars Goes West-------
After opening his first stateside flagship on Bleecker Street in Manhattan’s West Village last February, François Nars looked west when it came time to securing a second home for his eponymous brand. “We launched our first boutique in New York, and that was an obvious choice because I live in New York,” Nars explained this weekend in L.A., where he was on hand to officially celebrate the debut of his new Melrose Avenue location. “The strong makeup artist community in Los Angeles has been so supportive of NARS from the beginning,” he explained of why he decided to set up shop in the City of Angels. “Now we have created, in essence, a home base for those fans of the brand, where we can provide a truly unique NARS experience that they can’t receive anywhere else.”
That experience includes 1,500 square feet of equal parts retail store and service studio space, featuring six permanent stations in a modern, loftlike interior conceived of by Nars in collaboration with Fabien Baron. The black and white palette runs true to the line’s signature packaging (originally designed by Baron and his design firm), while high-gloss red lacquer accents appear in the same shade as the brand’s best-selling Jungle Red lipstick. Fittingly, the new store also features a dedicated 200-square-foot back room for the privacy-minded, a feature unique to the L.A. flagship, to cater to its soon-to-be Hollywood-heavy clientele—many of whom turned up to fête the famous famous painter. Mingling in the packed crowd were Kate and Laura Mulleavy, Rachel Zoe, Shiva Rose, and Alessandra Ambrosio, as well as Kirsty Hume who was waxing nostalgic. “I remember when he was developing the brand back in the day,” the nineties supe mentioned of her enduring relationship with Nars. “I’ve worked with François on a lot of photo shoots and shows and it’s exciting that the brand has grown so much.” Any beauty fiend in the SoCal area would likely agree.
