Disco Isn’t Dead
The sixties may have been the decade most mined by the fashion set this Spring, but the seventies have always held a bit more allure for us—not least because they were the heyday of some of our favorite style icons. The early days of disco excess and its seminal playground, Studio 54, played host to designers like Halston and Diane von Furstenberg and muses like Jerry Hall, Bianca Jagger, and Grace Jones. And then there was the music—and the makeup—informed by bands like ABBA and sparkling pigments swept across lips and cheeks, respectively. It’s not a coincidence that Poppy King chose the Swedish foursome’s seminal hit “Dancing Queen” as the name of her latest Lipstick Queen trio, as the sheer, matte-shimmering pigment applies with instant nostalgia. The Hustle is a luminescent honey-nude, The Cha Cha is a glimmering deep merlot, and the Electric Slide—that pivotal bar mitzvah favorite—is a glitter-flecked flirty rose. Each one is clearly holiday party-ready.
