Beauty Nostalgia: Reminiscing With…Laura Slatkin
Beauty Nostalgia is a weekly column on Beauty Counter in which we ask influencers, tastemakers, and some of our favorite industry experts to wax poetic on the sticks, salves, and sprays that helped shape who they are today.
The Pro: Laura Slatkin, founder and CEO of NEST Fragrances
The Product: “In 1984, I was dating a man, and one night he picked me up for dinner in a long, black stretch limousine. In the back of the limousine was a Chanel shopping bag. He had just arrived home from a business trip to Paris, and he brought me back a bottle of Coco perfume as a gift (in the eighties, men in long, black limousines always started the evening bearing gifts). Coco had just launched; it was literally one of the first bottles ever sold. Well, the guy didn’t last very long, but the perfume became my signature scent for twenty years. Every morning and every night, I doused myself in Coco Chanel perfume and I lathered my arms and legs in the coordinating luxurious moisture cream, which always left my young limbs glistening. When I married Harry [Slatkin]—who notices everything—he adored me in Coco perfume, and if I ever forgot to moisturize my legs, he would always remind me, and if I used a different brand, he actually noticed that, too! It is nice to have a husband that is passionate about beauty. Since then, I have been an admirer of Chanel. When I launched NEST Fragrances, I designed the packaging as a nod to Chanel, with black boxes and a white font. Racing stripes and color were added to give NEST its own identity, but it was Chanel that provided the overall inspiration.”
