The 411: Julie Hewett

-------

As awards season officially kicks off this Sunday, and we prepare to pay homage to the acting talents of Hollywood’s elite, it seems like the perfect time to highlight one of the many maestros who work behind the scenes to help these leading ladies get into character. Lest we forget in this age of HD cameras, the work of the makeup artist is more critical and closely-examined than ever before. In this realm, Julie Hewett is a master of her domain. After studying fashion at Parsons and running a store in L.A., she changed courses for a career in beauty, establishing a following among actresses—even in her early days as a freelance makeup artist—for her transformative abilities. Now, more than twenty years later, Hewett’s singular brushing—and blending—talents (she has been known to conjure up her own custom colors every now and again) are highly sought after. We don’t like to name-drop, but in the name of further familiarizing you with her beauty prowess, Hewett is responsible for facepainting Winona Ryder in Heathers, Liv Tyler in Inventing the Abbotts, Annette Bening in American Beauty, Nicole Kidman in Batman Forever, and Berenice Bejo in The Artist. Needless to say, when Hewett offered to share some of her own beauty picks here, we were all ears. Read on below.

The Complexion Corrector: Arcona Contour Facial
“I live for this treatment. It is a beauty workout for your face. They massage with these techniques you almost need a seat belt to handle. But the result is amazing. I have been doing this for years and swear by it.”
Arcona Studio, 425 Broadway Santa Monica, CA; www.arcona.com.

The Skincare Secret: Camellia Balm
“What can I say? This is a product from my line and my own recipe. Camellia Oil is the beauty secret of the geishas. It penetrates, heals, and protects. It is my addiction. I use it on set—even on my famous men clients.”
Available at www.juliehewett.net.

The Import Of Import: Amanda Lacey
“I love the Amanda Lacey skincare line out of London. I live for her cleansing pomade; it really is the best ever.”
Available at www.shenbeauty.com.

The Lash Bar: Blushington
“Even a make up artist needs to get her lashes dyed and I always go here. The services are so great I even send all my actress clients.”
8591 Sunset Blvd. West Hollywood, CA, (310) 652-5874, www.blushington.com.

The Pro Shop: Nigel Beauty Emporium
“This is where the pros shop. Nigel has everything you need and if he doesn’t have it, he will get in a flash. I depend on this place. I get my tools of the trade here, like my favorite brushes by Oscar-winner Ve Neill. And I love the Face Lace Mini Swirlyqueue eye lace tattoos; I can’t wait to use them on somebody.”
11252 Magnolia Boulevard, North Hollywood, CA, (818) 760-3902, www.nigelbeauty.com.

The Green Scene: Full O’ Life Natural Foods Market
“I often find myself in Burbank and the Full of Life health food store is my go to place for produce and unique organic skin care products. It’s a family-owned little gem.”
2515 West Magnolia Boulevard Burbank, CA, (818) 845-7411, www.fullolife.com.

The Point Person: Dr. Donna Dupre
“She is my acupuncturist and healer. She also does micro-current facials for me. She sells a serum that I love that she uses in her facials. I use it on my clients on set, and they always ask, ‘what is that?”
4444 Riverside Drive, Burbank, CA, (818) 563-9453.

The Dining Destination: Cleo
“It’s located inside the Redbury Hotel on Vine here in Hollywood. The food is so aromatic and exotic. Sometimes we sit at the bar and just have their Brussels sprouts. There are huge, black and white photos of Hollywood royalty like Greta Garbo. I feel so at home there.”
1717 Vine Street, Los Angeles, CA, (323) 962-1711, www.cleorestaurant.com.

The Great Escape: Maui
“Makena Beach in Maui is my favorite and I always stay at the Makena Resort. I always have a beach-side massage when I arrive. I love the perfume oil at The Enchantress boutique in nearby Wailea. I always take a couple of bottles home to remind me to relax.”
