The 411: Anndra Neen’s Phoebe and Annette Stephens

-------

The phrase “statement piece” gets thrown around a lot—too much, perhaps—in the jewelry realm. But the singular artful designs dreamt up by the sisters Stephens (that’d be Phoebe and Annette) for their accessory line Anndra Neen are just that; call them declaration pieces, even. After steering from their original career paths (Phoebe worked for Phillips de Pury, Annette in theater), they were motivated to start their brand in 2009, after a trip to Japan. And while elements of Japanese design have shown up in the pair’s work, they pluck inspiration from a motley array of sources—Bauhaus, Egyptian motifs, and their own childhoods spent living in Mexico City with a hyper-talented family: Their grandmother, sculptor and jewelry designer Annette Nancarrow, crafted eclectic pre-Colombian-style pieces prized by women like Frida Kahlo, Anaïs Nin, and Peggy Guggenheim (the knack for creating wearable objets d’art clearly runs in the family). The duo take an out-of-the-box approach to everything in their lives, fashion and beauty included, so we were eager to get the inside scoop on a few of their favorite things.

The Beauty Balm: African Shea Butter “You can put it in your hair, face, and body—after a week, your skin feels so soft.”

The In-Town Escape: The Greenwich Hotel Spa
“They have a beautiful indoor pool. We love to go there when we need to unwind and get away. You don’t feel like you are in New York. We also recommend the facials and massages there. You can soak in a Japanese-style bath, then have the most delicious yuzu-and-agave drink.”

The Body Builder: Tracy Anderson

The Detox Destination: Temazcal at The Posada del Tepozteco
“A temazcal is a sweat lodge that originated in pre-Hispanic times. They have an amazing one in the town of Tepoztlán, at the Posada del Tepozteco Hotel. It is a valley an hour south of Mexico City, with the most gorgeous mountains. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as well as The Magnificent Seven were both filmed there.”
