Beauty 411: Kate Young

-------

With the launch this week of her very own Target line, super-stylist Kate Young could become a household name. But for dedicated followers of fashion, Young, who cut her teeth at Vogue and Teen Vogue (she styled the teen style bible’s premiere cover) has long been a familiar presence. Besides lending her styling talents to a number of designers—Jason Wu and Vena Cava among them—Young is especially known for her red-carpet wizardry with clients such as Michelle Williams, Natalie Portman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Rachel Weisz. Her formula, which often includes vintage and plenty of offbeat colors, strikes that tenuous balance of nudging the style envelope without ever being too over-the-top—take as evidence Michelle’s tomato-red strapless peplum Louis Vuitton in 2012, Rachel’s black net polka-dot Louis Vuitton for the 2013 Golden Globes, and Natalie’s mid-pregnancy blush silk Viktor & Rolf with a beaded rose embellishment for the 2011 Globes. Unsurprisingly, Young, with her signature snow-white hair, is known to make quite a fashionable impression herself, so we were especially keen to get a peek at her beauty black book.

The Hair Authorities: Orlando or Joe at Orlo Salon

“I love everyone at this salon and really look forward to my appointments. I try not to cut my hair until they tell me that I need to…left to my own devices, it would be to my waist.”

For more information, visit www.orlosalon.com.

The Platinum Whiz: Jennifer at Orlo

“She’s the best—my hair is white, white, white, and it’s in reasonable condition because of her.”

For more information, visit www.orlosalon.com.

The Spa Escape Close to Home: The Greenwich Hotel

“The spa at The Greenwich Hotel is amazing. The pool is so beautiful, and the room was imported from Japan, or something insane. They have a treatment where they give you a special bath based on the season, and then a long massage. It’s the best.”

The Glow Giver: Joanna Vargas

“All the people I know with beautiful skin go to Joanna for facials. It’s amazing the difference she makes in your skin—clear, glowing, and tight when you leave.”

The Acupuncturist: Shane Hoffman at Turning Point

“He’s really cool. I don’t go very often, but I’d like to.”

The Workout: Running

“I love Nike shoes and have a Nike running watch that tracks everything. I’m running a half marathon at the end of the month.”

The Natural-Food Resource: Erewhon

“Erewhon in L.A. is the best! I love it there; there’s so much crazy natural health stuff. My favorite is Starfire water, which resonates with the vibes of the universe. Hilarious and amazing. I’ll try anything.”

The Getaway: Palm Springs

“I go to my house upstate to chill, but I love Palm Springs and was just thinking it would be nice to go to the Viceroy there or take a long weekend at Two Bunch Palms.”

The Beauty Arsenal

“The products I rely on are Rodin Oil, Eminence powder sunblock, Ren Glyco Lactic Mask, Elixir Ultime hair oil by Kérastase, and L’Artisan Passage d’Enfer perfume. I also love the new NARS glossy lip pencils and have a slight obsession with Aesop mouthwash.”
