Let The Good Times Roll
Sisters Annie and Therese Gibbons know a thing or two about fragrance. After twelve years living in Lake Como, Italy, where the home-fragrance method of reed dispersal is a popular practice, the Minnesota-born duo brought the diffuser concept to the States with Alora Ambiance back in 2000, setting off a mass hysteria (and a number of imitations). “But this is not Alora,” Therese says of their latest project, which has launched them into the personal-fragrance game. Terveer, as their debut line of perfume roll-ons is called, is an homage to their mother, Marie Terveer. “She loved perfume,” Therese says. “[Our father] used to drive to Minneapolis, three hours away, to buy her a bottle of Chanel No. 5.” “We wanted to do something personal,” adds Annie, who explains that essential oils possess the “pureness” and “intimacy” they were looking for. The result is a three-piece collection that includes Gardenia, a clementine, gardenia, tuberose, and soft woods homage to the Hawaiian landscape Annie now calls home; Incense, which pairs sweet bergamot with tobacco flower, oud wood, black patchouli, and a burnt-firewood accord to recall the Romanesque churches that are reminiscent of their time spent in Italy; and Green, an ode to the farmlands of Southern Minnesota that is rich with essences of ivy, galbanum, crushed fig leaves, oakmoss, and vetiver. Luxe and potent, they wear incredibly long, thanks to the quality of the raw materials used in each beautifully packaged PerfumeAlum holder (the fragrances themselves are also sold in refills, which can be twisted into the heavyweight vial topper). “We plan to do at least one fragrance a year,” Therese explains of their expansion plans with the brand, which is certainly something to look forward to.
