The Beauty of Understated Statement Makeup

In this, the age of the statement-lip and nail-art resurgence, I find myself more and more choosing subtlety over extravagance. Call it an austerity measure; as much as I’ve loved glossy fuchsia pout perfectors and contrasting hand designs etched with polish pens in the past, I have a hard time getting excited about them these days, drawn instead to cosmetics that enhance, rather than overpower. It’s precisely because of this that Dior’s new Lip and Nail Glow have found a special place in my product arsenal. Meant to slightly bump up the natural pink color of your lips and tips, the Nail Glow applies with a shiny rose finish that provides an impossibly healthy quality, while the Lip Glow serves a similar purpose, albeit in emollient gloss form. Both are impactful, without ever being over-the-top—which reminds me of a very quotable sound bite Guido Palau once gave me backstage at Saint Laurent, circa Fall 2011: “It’s the little things that give the big kind of chicness.”
