Beauty 411: Annet King of Dermalogica
Dermalogica products have always been the equivalent of a skincare safety net for me—I know that even when I have driven my complexion to the point of no return by test-driving a plethora of new lotions and potions, I can always count on them to restore order and balance. And Dermalogica’s best endorsement may just come from Annet King, the brand’s director of global education. The British-born California resident is, as anyone who has had the distinct pleasure of meeting her can attest, a virtual wellspring of skincare information. She has always had a snappy response for any and all of my complexion queries, of which there have been many over the years. Here, Dermalogica’s in-house guru dishes about her favorite beautifying people and places (most are close to her Culver City home—”I am a total locavore and believe in minimizing travel time on the L.A. freeways, biking if possible, especially on the weekends, and, of course, supporting local businesses,” she says), and shares the details of her own daily routine…did I mention she has ridiculously amazing skin?
THE REGULAR TREATMENT: Dermalogica on Montana
“I believe in healthy, super-clean, hydrated skin. I can’t live without Dermalogica on Montana, and a few times a year I’ll get the full skin treatment with foot reflex touch therapy, but when time is short, the twenty-minute MicroZone Treatments are my savior. All the staff is superb—they are the most well-trained, educated skin therapists on the planet!”

THE GO-TO DERM: Dr. Joshua Wieder
“For medical skin issues, I rely on Dr. Joshua Wieder. He’s so patient and professional, and one of the most respected dermatologists around. He also appreciates the role and work of a skin therapist, and refers many of his patients to our spaces.”

THE RE-ALIGNER: Dr. Robert Pomahac
“With the amount of travel I do and flights I take (not to mention my passion for high heels), I could not live without a regular adjustment from my friend and chiropractor Dr. Robert Pomahac. He views the body very differently and does not just crack your back! He incorporates physiotherapy, provides strengthening exercises to do at your desk, and gives you tips on how you should sit while you’re driving, etc. He has the best advice to suit your busy lifestyle.”

THE MANE TAMER: Lisa at Nesou
“I have known Lisa for sixteen years and love that I don’t even need to make a decision; she does what she wants and makes my hair look great every time. She knows me so well and what my job entails, so she’ll teach me quick updos and easy fixes for when I’m presenting or shooting videos. And Salon Nesou in Santa Monica, where she works, is such a great space.”

THE NO-FUSS MASSAGE: Massage Garage
“I like a good old-fashioned Swedish massage, with deep tissue around the shoulders and neck. I like to do this once a month, so I prefer a no-fuss kind of place that’s right on my doorstep! The therapists here are very professional and well trained.”

THE FAR-FLUNG TREATMENT SPOT
“When I’m traveling, I try to find a good local reflexology spot and head there immediately after I check in to my hotel. When there’s a group of us from Dermalogica going overseas for conferences, we make it our mission to find the best spot and all go together. It’s so much fun and we have had treatments as late as 1 a.m. in places like Cape Town…its waterfront wellness market is great and offers treatments, crystals, crafts, and tea!”

“I prefer to work out after work, but after a long day, I need a little motivation. The Spectrum Club is close to my house and on my drive home. So I’ll change at work to save time and avoid the locker room, then get straight on the treadmill or cardio machine. I believe in breaking a sweat every day even if it’s just for forty-five minutes on the elliptical cross-trainer, which is my cardio machine of choice. When I need to kick it up a notch, I’ll do spin and barre classes at Fit On Studios, which is near the Dermalogica office; the 30/30 class is superb! I am also very fortunate to have a pool at home, which I love to use to unwind and tone. My hubby got me a pair of Speedo resistance gloves as a surprise gift and I love them! They add some nice resistance to your butterfly and
THE SIGNATURE SCENTS
“When I’m traveling through Heathrow. I stock up on Jo Malone. My signature fragrance for day is her Grapefruit Cologne, and for night, I mix it with Pomegranate Noir. I love the blend-ability of JM! I also like Narciso Rodriguez for night. If I’m in London, I always go to Neal’s Yard Remedies in Covent Garden to get some pure essential oils and blends.”
THE MAKEUP ROUNDUP
“The new iconic curl Dior mascara is amazing, and its lash primer is the best, especially for my stubby Asian lashes! Its pen concealer is also great for beige skin tones like mine. For blush, I love Mally Roncal’s trios. Her colors are perfect for my skin tone, and I also love her high-shine lip pens. I even buy her High-Shine Liquid Lipstick Pen in Starburst in bulk so I have extras for my friends! I am a total eye-shadow and eyeliner junkie, and will try anything and everything. Nars and MAC have wonderful colors, but I think Revlon Colorstay Quad in Coffee Bean is my favorite for day, and Smashbox Liquid Liner Pen is a good performer. For foundation, I like Chanel Vitalumière Aqua in Beige 40—it’s super light and formulated without comedogenic ingredients. And I love a bright lip, like Lancôme’s Rouge In Love in Sequence of Love, a great coral-red color that is long-lasting and never drying!”
THE BODY BRONZER
“For a touch of color on my legs and arms, I swear by Beautisol, the brainchild of my dear friend Sinead Norenius, which I helped test. It doesn’t dry out the skin like most self-tanners and has no unpleasant odor. Her mitt is superb and stops any chance of mistakes.”

THE HAIR HELPERS
“My current favorite shampoo is S Factor (sulfate free) by TIGI, but after color I like Pureology’s Hydrate System. For styling I use Kérastase Elixir Ultime on my ends and Davines No.14 Sea Salt Primer for volume at the roots.”
