That Seventies Glow

bellafreudIn honor of the last day of London fashion week, I thought I’d celebrate by perching British designer Bella Freud’s latest scented candle, 1970, next to my desk. With so much seventies inspiration coming into play backstage already this season (like the lank hair at Proenza Schouler, influenced by the posse of skaters and surfers that ruled the California shores and sidewalks during this decade, or the glamorous bohemian look at Donna Karan, where Lauren Hutton served as one of the muses), I thought that what I burn should be on trend as well. While Freud cites her childhood spent on the Spanish island of Formentera, incense on the beach at sunset, and a glass of Coca-Cola with a slice of lemon in it at as her jumping-off point for her latest creation, the heady notes of frankincense, patchouli, sandalwood, and musk embody the free-spirited era and the oils dabbed on by many at the time. (This blend, however, is far less pungent than the greasy elixirs.) But what I enjoy even more than the warm aroma is the sleek black jar that dons the same 1970-emblazoned white stripe as one of the designer’s cult-favorite merino wool jumpers (worn by both Kate Moss and Alexa Chung). Very groovy indeed.
