The Art of Deception

maybellineWhat you see is not always what you get—a lesson I learned quickly this week when Ruby Jean Wilson faked me out with a blond birthday wig via Instagram. The same can be said for the Maybelline New York Color Elixir, a new formula launching next month. When the collection landed on my desk, I couldn’t wait to try out one of the twenty shades that range from blush to burgundy. That is until I discovered that the clear packaging was but an optical illusion—they were not in fact bullets of creamy lipstick (as they appear from the outside), but super-saturated glosses. As I have made crystal clear on many occasions, I don’t do shiny, or for that matter, sticky. But just because those packaging geniuses were so clever, I broke my own beauty rule and dove in. Cushiony and full coverage—if I were to ever switch camps, these would be at the top of my list. Then again, trading in my lipstick for the slick stuff would require some real magic.

$9; available in November at drugstores.
