Reminiscing With…Nyakio Kamoche Grieco

-------

coffee-face-polishBeauty Nostalgia is a column on Beauty Counter in which we ask influencers, tastemakers, and some of our favorite industry experts to wax poetic on the sticks, salves, and sprays that helped shape who they are today.

The Pro: Nyakio Kamoche Grieco, founder of Nyakio skincare.

The Product: “One of my earliest childhood memories is from a trip to Kenya when I was 8 years old. The beauty and sophistication of Africa really spoke to me—the lush lands, vibrant colors, spirit of its people, and sensorial experiences that are uniquely Kenyan. I visited with my grandmother, who was also named Nyakio, on our family’s sustainable coffee farm. After working outdoors during the day, she would boil down Kenyan coffee beans with honey and oil, apply the grounds to her skin, and then exfoliate with a sugarcane rod. I vividly remember her skin’s [glow] and how she maintained a youthful complexion well into her nineties! [She taught me] about the benefits of energizing caffeine and the hydrating properties of essential oils, which inspired me to create my own Kenyan Coffee Collection. It has an aroma of citrus and nonbitter coffee that always takes me back to that farm in Kenya, the beauty of family rituals, and the connection to my late grandmother, who taught me how to radiate from the inside out.”
