Reminiscing With…Shen Beauty’s Jessica Richards
Beauty Nostalgia is a column on Beauty Counter in which we ask influencers, tastemakers, and some of our favorite industry experts to wax poetic on the sticks, salves, and sprays that helped shape who they are today.
The Pro: Jessica Richards, co-founder of Shen Beauty
The Product: “Must de Cartier for Women brings back the strongest memories for me. My mother (shown above) always wore it, and to this day, it reminds me of her. I grew up in California in the eighties and I remember putting a bottle of it in my luggage before I left for Ojai Valley boarding school when I was about 11 or 12. I hoped that it would make me as pretty as she was—and still is. My mom is a quarter Native American and has super-sharp features: blond hair, blue eyes, and tan skin. She was a total hippie but dressed in Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel. I still have an old bottle of Must de Cartier that I’m sure would smell ‘off’ to a nose, but is perfect to me. I have to twist the spritzer to get out those last drops, but I always wear it around the holidays. It’s a pretty heady scent and quite strong, but this [eau] helped shape the way I buy fragrance today. I still love anything with bergamot, vetiver, patchouli, amber, or sandalwood. My mother wore her Must de Cartier up until a few years ago when I introduced her to Amanda Lacey Agrumi di Sicilia. It’s a completely different scent, but I think more modern…and less eighties!”
