Pure and Simple, Backstage at Mary Katrantzou


mary-katrantzouMary Katrantzou’s departure from her signature digital prints called for a shift in makeup. Or so face painter Val Garland thought. “We changed the [look] two or three times in total, and the last change was only an hour and a half ago,” Garland explained. “Originally we were going to do something quite bold, but I have been working with Mary since the very beginning and I know who her woman is, and she will always be a lot simpler. So we scaled everything right back.” The result of this paring down was perfect matte skin, soft English Rose lips, and flushed cheeks. Lids were washed with silver, while lashes remained bare. “I haven’t touched mascara this season in London,” Garland noted.

This focus on simplicity extended to fingertips, where manicurist Marian Newman used two coats of MAC Blue Pearl (out July 2014) to lend a sheer iridescence that glowed blue in certain lights and just as quickly disappeared.

Anthony Turner rounded out the look with hair inspired by fashion darling Mariacarla Boscono. He locked in each model’s center part with L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni Art Pli, and crafted mermaid-like waves with a one-inch curling iron. To finish, Mythic Oil was applied to the lengths for separation and a slight sheen. The designer may have switched up what she sent down the runway this season, but in terms of beauty, Katrantzou stuck to her guns.
