They’re so popular, in fact, creams and liquids that fill in fine lines and wrinkles to properly prep skin for makeup are now a dime a dozen on retail counters, which make mind-blowing developments in the category few and far between these days—something that was not lost on Illamasqua. The British brand that appreciates a little shock and awe when it comes to product development (the unisex cosmetics line created “for your alter ego” already includes white foundation, green lipstick, and glow-in-the-dark nail lacquers galore) was looking to carve out a niche for itself in this growing share of the market, and managed to do just that with its new Hydra Veil. The result of actual consumer feedback that highlighted the fact that heavily pigmented foundations often appear cakey when applied to dehydrated skin, its unique gel texture is part moisturizer, part base, and all intrigue. The antioxidant-fueled formula comes with a little scooper that you actually need to help portion out a small amount of the buoyant jelly, which melts into your skin once it is spread over the face and neck. It hydrates on impact and can be applied under—or over—makeup; a light patting of Hydra Veil on the under-eye area is a clutch concealer-reactivator come 4 P.M.

That’s just a small window into how influential the Victoria’s Secret model has become on matters of health and wellness. An avid yoga practitioner and a fan of eating raw and organic, Kerr caught the attention of the beauty world when she launched her own all-natural skincare line, KORA Organics—a twenty-one-piece lineup of face and body essentials—that is as eco-luxe as it gets. “The range is exactly what I was looking for myself but was unable to find,” says Kerr. “I receive daily testimonies from customers all over the world who have firsthand seen the benefits of using KORA,” she insists—although getting a steady supply of the natural-ingredient-packed range is easier said than done if you live outside of Australia.

But that’s all about to change. This week, Kerr has announced an exclusive partnership with Net-a-Porter, whose newly launched beauty section will now stock select KORA items for a broader, American and European audience. “I personally love to shop at Net-a-Porter. It’s an easy, luxurious experience,” Kerr admits, adding that her Revitalizing Body Pack is a great place to start if you’re new to the line. “It includes my essentials for radiant, glowing skin for your body: Exfoliating Cream, Energizing Citrus Mist, Enriched Body Lotion, and Luxurious Rosehip Body Oil. [The oil] is one of my all-time favorite products.”

As for Kerr’s other tips for maintaining an angelic body—and lifestyle—she’s all about balance. “I live by the 80/20 rule. Moderation is key and essential. I try my best to fill my body with healthy organic food when I can, but enjoy a little indulgence every now and then! I believe if we choose to fill our bodies with healthy food, our minds with healthy thoughts, and nurture our spirit with rituals we enjoy, it can lead to a solid foundation of happiness.” Noted.

But don’t tell that to British hitmaker Charli XCX. The well-adjusted 20-year-old and the voice behind the song that is currently stuck in our heads, a collaboration with Icona Pop called “I Love It (I Don’t Care)” (Girls watchers will remember the jam from the dance-party scene during Hannah’s short-lived cocaine addiction), Charli—short for Charlotte—is a different kind of pop princess. Accented by mounds of black eyeliner, punky lyrics, and midriff-baring T-shirts, her sound isn’t so much candy-coated as rich with rhythm-backed synth riffs that are immediately catchy. As for the XCX bit, “it was part of my MSN screen name when I was 13, and it kind of stuck,” she told us when we caught up with her in the middle of a tour in support of True Romance, her debut album that features the addictive track, “Nuclear Seasons.” Here, the “nineties chick” at heart, talks about late-night clubbing, being inspired by Britney and Baby Spice, and her unconventional secret to the perfect dark lipstick.

— Sarah Z. Wexler

How did you get into music at just 14?
As soon as I saw “Hit Me Baby (One More Time),” I knew I loved Britney and music videos, and I was in awe; it inspired me to start making music. I started writing, but it was just me kind of experimenting. I posted demos on MySpace, and a guy who ran a club in East London brought me up to play these raves. I started performing and became a regular in that scene. My parents came with me. They’d drive me and stay at the parties; usually I would play at 2 or 3 A.M. and leave at 6 A.M. At the time, I wasn’t into hanging out with my parents. We’d drive home in the morning and stop for breakfast. They were really supportive. We were always the weird family at the warehouse parties.

Um…Amazing. Why is the new album called True Romance?
All of the songs are about love and my experience with relationships and how I’ve changed my opinion on love, how the relationships have changed me. In true romance, you don’t have just walking on clouds, amazing, happy, beachy moments. To have true romance, you also have to have isolating, depressing moments of crying. The songs are about both. Some are happier and some are darker; some are pop; and others are more mysterious—and that’s what romance is like in real life. “Stay Away” is about an unhealthy obsession with someone, making yourself ill over them, but I haven’t been through that, so it’s more of an imagining.

Your Icona Pop collaboration “I Love It (I Don’t Care)” is the theme song for Snooki & Jwoww—do you watch the show?
That made me really laugh. I don’t watch the show religiously, but I’ve seen it. I think Snooki is pretty cute. They’re both hilarious.

You’re becoming known more and more for heavy eye makeup and dark lips. What do you use?
I’m terrible with girly stuff; I’m a shit girl in that sense. I just use any black liquid eyeliner, Boots No.7 at the moment. I used to be bad at applying it and put loads on when I was 15, but now I have a lot of practice doing it since I don’t experiment with other looks and do it every day. People are intimidated by liquid liner, but it’s easier to whack on really quickly. I like MAC Mineral Powder because it makes my skin glow but looks like I’m not wearing any makeup. And I always use an old red lipstick that was my mom’s; I stole it from her! I blend it with a black Lor&#233:al crayon eye pencil, smudge it in, and blend it so it does this ombré thing where it’s darker on the outer edge and gets lighter toward the inside.

That’s pretty impressive for someone who’s terrible at girly stuff. You’re also known for taking risks with your shoes. Why do you love such massive platforms?
Because when I was younger, I was really into the Spice Girls. I wanted to be Baby Spice and have blonde hair and dye my eyebrows, but I would have looked like an alien. Platforms from Buffalo and Jeffrey Campbell are my favorites. I don’t wear heels much, and onstage they make me taller, but they’re more comfortable. I like how they look superhero-esque. I wear them all the time, everywhere I go; they’re my everyday shoes as well as my party shoes. But they have no grips, so I turn into Bambi on ice; I fall over a lot when it’s raining!

Time stood momentarily still, for example, when Lancôme nabbed Julia Roberts; when Dior signed Natalie Portman; and when Coty got Beyoncé’s fragrance license. But as of this morning, Calvin Klein appears to have scored this year’s biggest beauty coup: The iconic New York design house, whose fragrances are produced by Coty’s Prestige arm, has just announced that Rooney Mara will front its latest fragrance, Downtown. The Italian cedrat, bergamot, Tunisian neroli, gardenia, violet leaf, Texan cedarwood and incense eau, which launches in September, has another big name to its credit, too: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo director, David Fincher, has signed on to create the television ad campaign starring Mara.

It’s Rooney’s first foray into beauty, a move that was certainly a long time coming, although one that we always assumed would involve Parfums Givenchy, considering the actress’ close ties to Riccardo Tisci. But partnering with Klein—he of such groundbreaking fragrances as ck one and Euphoria—is certainly nothing to sneeze at. One question remains, however: Who will win over Mara when skincare, makeup, and hair-care deals are on the table? Let us know your bets below.

Here’s a secret: Whenever we fly, we put under-eye masks on about twenty minutes before we land to ensure that we look fresh despite many hours of travel. Today, Glee star Lea Michelle revealed via Instagram that she does the same thing.
Even though Jennifer Aniston looks back at her famous “Rachel” haircut with a boatload of regret, its onetime popularity was still a bigger deal than even the “Kate Middleton,” according to the Duchess of Cambridge’s own hairstylist, Richard Ward. [Daily Mail]

According to a new poll from the American Academy of Facial and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), social media activity may be driving an uptick in plastic surgery requests.

Gatsby buzz aside, there is another movie premiering at Cannes this week that’s making us wish we were sipping cocktails on La Croisette, the torrential downpours that have been plaguing the Côte d’Azur not withstanding. That’d be The Bling Ring, Sofia Coppola’s new film about a group of celebrity-obsessed teenagers living in Los Angeles who decide, for kicks, to burglarize the homes of Hollywood stars. After raiding the million-dollar designer closets of their victims—including Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan—and soaking up fame along the way, the gang is eventually nabbed and brought to justice, sort of. Here’s the most scintillating part: It’s a true story, reported in an article Nancy Jo Sales wrote for Vanity Fair in 2010, and starring Emma Watson in the big-screen adaptation. For more on the ridiculous vanity captured in every scene, Style.com caught up with the film’s lead makeup artist, Roz Music, to talk about tramp stamps, weekly spray tans, and the discontinued Chanel lipstick that Coppola flew in from Paris in order to get the perfect pink for a single scene.

—Kari Molvar

How did you get involved with The Bling Ring?
Sofia and I are old friends, I had heard she was doing this movie, and I hoped—and suspected—she would ask me to do the makeup. Especially since it was shot in my hometown [Los Angeles].

How much of the makeup look was inspired by the actual teenagers who the film is based on?
Very little. There are a million kids out here in L.A. that look like the main characters. It’s a very particular style. I just took my camera out and Instagrammed for days, taking pictures of kids in their natural environment. I didn’t want Teen Vogue‘s version of how their closet would look. I wanted to see real kids doing their own thing. So I took a million pictures and that was my research.

So how, exactly, would you describe that rich-kid-L.A. look?
It’s like kids who are trying to look older than they are. They’re sixteen, but with the hairstyles and shoes of a 30-year-old. They’ve got short shorts and high, high heels. Some of the stuff was outrageous. I mean, they’re indulgent, bratty teenagers.

Considering her previous reputation as a do-gooding wizard, how did you go about turning Emma Watson into an “indulgent, bratty teenager”?
Well, we gave her a tramp-stamp tattoo! Emma’s character is one of those spiritual people who wants to express it on the outside—as in, she does yoga and talks about it all the time. She’s an eye-roll-y character. We wanted the tattoo to be an expression of that, so we went with a lotus flower.

What else was key to her transformation?
We had to lengthen her hair—she used extensions, and hours went into that hair every day. Then we focused on her lashes, since that’s the trick to making her look well made-up without having to invest a lot of time. I used L’Oréal Voluminous Million Lashes mascara for everyone on set; all of the actresses had their own tube with their name on it. Emma’s skin is flawless, so I just used primer, instead of foundation, to moisturize her skin and get her camera-ready.

Seriously? No foundation? And her skin clarity still resonated on camera? How did you manage that?
I used Skyn Iceland Glacial Cleansing Cloths on her in the morning and to take her makeup off. They’re great because if someone comes in late for work, you can just clean the face without any water. She uses Jurlique Calendula Cream every morning. I put a little box with her makeup basics by her chair to use when she was getting her hair done. She would actually do prep work on herself, like curling her lashes and putting on her mascara. Even that ten minutes of work would save us time.

How did you prep the rest of the cast?
Katie [Chang] has the best skin I’ve seen in my life. It’s absolutely pore-less. But we had to tan everyone, since all the actresses were pretty pale. We made them spray-tan appointments with Fiona Locke from St. Tropez every week.

In one scene, Emma’s character is tempted by some lip gloss, right?
Yes, she’s applying Chantecaille Brilliant Gloss in Mirth while robbing one of the houses. We had so many hot-pink lipsticks on set. Emma later wears a Make Up For Ever Lab Shine Lip Gloss in Chrome Candy that is insane. It’s a really metallic pink gloss, and she wears it in the interview scene at the end of the film.

How much did Sofia weigh in on the makeup decisions?
She had some specific things in mind at times. For example, she was in love with this particular Chanel lipstick called Kensington that was discontinued. It was the hottest pink, the most obvious Barbie bubblegum pink, and it was absolutely gorgeous. Sofia called her friend in France and tracked down the last remaining tubes for us. That’s the color that Katie puts on at Paris’ house.

What was it like working with such a young cast?
It’s kinda heaven because their skin is so tight and beautiful, and they’re not worried about wrinkles or the texture of their skin. But they’re teenagers, so they can be distracted easily, and there was a lot of horsing around in the trailer. It was like Dance Party USA in there sometimes, when they would be playing rap music, while we were following them around trying to glue on an eyelash or apply eye glitter. But we never shut it down. We had a lot of fun.

The Model: Tully Jensen

The Moment: Naturally beautiful

The Motivation: Red-carpet watchers might have noticed an increasing move toward more natural beauty looks of late (see both the Oscars and the Met Ball); even the backstage trenches seem to be favoring a similar aesthetic, particularly with nails, which have been overwhelmingly nude for the past few seasons. But beauty is cyclical, as we realize more and more, and a fresh face with minimal manicuring has gotten plenty of play before. Behold, a 1989 image of Tully Jensen, sans blush and sans brow grooming, embracing a neutral mouth and a wee bit of chocolaty brown eye pencil beneath her lower lash line. From her flawless (and contour-less) face to her effortlessly tousled hair, this is a look we find ourselves gravitating toward more and more as the days get longer—and warmer—and an unfussy regimen becomes evermore appealing. You too?

Her lipcentric lineup of crème lipsticks, rouge pots, matte pencils, and sheer balms—all formulated with food-grade ingredients, such as organic shea and fruit butters spiked with red-wine resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant—was picked up by Sephora, where it has been sold exclusively ever since. The range’s point of difference on the primping emporium’s increasingly crowded shelves is not just its green-leaning ethos, but its shockingly vivid color payoff; we’ve used all manner of all-natural lipsticks before, but none that deliver quite like Bite, which is a real passion project for Langmuir. “My favorite experience is when I am mixing and blending new and inspired color creations,” she says—an experience that will now be part of the public domain.

Starting tomorrow, the Toronto-based brand will officially open the doors to its first-ever pop-up shop in Soho, where customers can mix their own lip color and then watch as a troop of Bite professionals actually melt, pour, and package the customized bullet. “We wanted to create something that is totally new,” Langmuir explains of what will evolve into a permanent brick-and-mortar, on Thompson Street, come September. Designed in collaboration with the Austrian firm EOOS, the space is equipped with a center bar, “play stations,” where you can actually blend multiple different cream lip colors—a zinfandel red with a little white and some peach to create a warm rose, perhaps—before you choose a scent (current choices include a superfruit blend, cherry, peppermint, and lavender) and watch as trained technicians churn out your personalized product following a five-minute heating-and-cooling process. In today’s world of complicated ingredient labels and constant clamor over the hazardous chemicals that are readily put into cosmetics, it doesn’t get more transparent than that.

Bite Beauty, 174 Prince Street, NYC, open from 11 AM – 7 PM, Tuesday-Sunday; www.bitebeauty.com.
