Nicole Richie was one of the hippie headband’s strongest proponents when the thin DIY accoutrements had their second coming in the early aughts. Her reality television days are long behind her, but the designer and mother of two still seems to have a fondness for those headbands, as evidenced by her cameo at a Baby2Baby event last night in LA. Richie not only strung up a strand of rhinestones across her forehead, but along her part, too—à la Peter Gray’s sparkly accoutrements backstage at Badgley Mischka. Not so long ago, we lived for barrettes. In seventh grade, it was plastic baby clips in the mold of ducks, birds, and other similarly infantile shapes, and then it was barrettes of the multicolored, mini-sized Goody variety, which have since been discontinued and which we buy in bulk should we happen upon them at an outdated pharmacy. So, you can understand why we’re quite pleased to see the youthful hair accessory having a major moment for Spring. We’ve already mentioned the chunky plastic pieces Cynthia Rowley whipped up for her show this weekend and the plain silver metal bars hair stylist Odile Gilbert used to create a sleek, graphic silhouette at Prabal Gurung. And it just keeps getting better! Orlando Pita and his crack team of coif masters assembled barrettes covered in actual hair to hold and seamlessly blend into models’ own tresses at Carolina Herrera on Monday, mimicking the silhouette of fluid, belted Korean robes. Then yesterday, Peter Gray strung up bejewled golden charms onto bobby pins and inserted them into big, soft, Seventies-era coifs at Badgley Mischka before a rousing Rodarte show where Gilbert was called on yet again to insert ten different barrettes the Mulleavy sisters made with their own hands into sixties-style, rough-dried, easy, California-girl hair. It was cute, it was classic, and it looked amazing with their gold dresses, which we definitely wouldn’t have appreciated back in middle school, but would love to slip into now. Some things change, some stay the same.
Lacquer lovers that we are, we’ve come to look forward to a Deborah Lippmann sighting backstage at the shows. Last season at Zac Posen, we got to preview Supermodel, her bright red jelly polish, and sure enough, she turned up at Donna Karan yesterday, with a handful of new polishes in tow. While painting girls’ tips with Believe, a gold/silver metallic color that she created for a Cher tour a few years back, Lippmann produced another square glass bottle for our perusal. “Glitter in the Air,” she said, revealing the name of the sheer baby blue varnish with salmon and blue glitter flecks embedded in every stroke that will be part of her Spring 2011 collection. Lippmann wouldn’t tell us where the polish would make its runway debut, but we found out bright and early this morning when we spied it backstage at Badgley Mischka layered over Fashion, a creamy opaque mocha. Here, for your first viewing pleasure, yet another must-have for spring. Start planning your weekly manicures now.
Spending a concentrated amount of time pulling backstage duty each season, we have noticed a few secret weapons in makeup artists’ kits. Cosmetics, after all, can only go so far on their own. Tubs of Vaseline and tins of Smith’s Rosebud Salve make frequent appearances from New York to Paris, since, when combined with an eye shadow or pigment powder, each can create an instant grease paint for eyes, cheeks, and lips—and can even be turned into a colored mascara, as we saw Charlotte Willer whip up backstage at DKNY last month. For all skincare concerns, Pat McGrath keeps SK-II Signs Eye Masks on hand, so that in the event that an overtired, sallow-skinned model shows up in her chair—be it at Anna Sui, Dolce & Gabbana, or Balenciaga—she can instantly make dark circles and parched skin right as rain (“It takes just five minutes,” McGrath recently divulged of the cotton overlay’s super powers). Alternatively, Tom Pecheux prefers Rodin’s Olio Lusso for all complexion corrections and has toted the yellow elixir with him from Badgley Mischka to Balmain. Branded as a “skin scent” that doubles as a liquid moisturizer-cum-illuminator-cum-total miracle worker, Olio Lusso is packed with 11 essential oils, including ever popular and skin-regenerating argan, as well as apricot, evening primrose, and arnica, which reduces puffiness. The supple, glowing results are visible almost immediately, whether you use it as a primer pre-foundation or slather it on cathartically before bed. At a very basic level, though, it just feels (and smells) good, making it one of the best beauty tips we’ve come away with from the shows.
In addition to getting an opportunity to watch some of the best makeup artists in the world play with a selection of as-yet-unreleased cosmetics this week, we got word of a few new launches that we think you might find very interesting. MAC Cosmetics has big plans for black; it will release a still unnamed collection of black lip glosses, lipsticks, eye shadows, and greasepaint sticks later this year, all of which are as versatile as they are straightforward. Cases in point: Polly Osmond used the black lipstick from the new line to create maybe the best gray lip of the week at Tuleh; Charlotte Tilbury applied the new gold-flecked black gloss to eyes for a wet shimmer
at Donna Karan; and Tom Pecheux combined the metallic black Mineralize Eye Shadow with shades of blue and gray for a more complex smoky eye at Badgley Mischka. We were even more intrigued by a tip we got backstage at Doo.Ri, where we learned that manicurist and nail polish creative genius Jin Soon is reportedly partnering with MAC to launch a line of matte nail polishes due out in September. (Like we’ve said before, matte nail polish: huge for fall.) You heard it here first.
