Throwback Thursday: Hair Jewelry

-------

Gisele-Bundchen-by-Herb-Ritts,-Vogue-FR,-November-1999_resizedThrowback Thursday is a regular column on Beauty Counter in which we pore over the pages of our favorite glossies from decades past in search of a little modern-day makeup and hair inspiration.

The Model: Gisele Bündchen

The Moment: Bejeweled headpieces

The Motivation: The French are often at the forefront of breaking trends, and in the case of hair jewelry, the above shot proves that, yet again, they are a cut above the rest. Trust Paris Vogue to drape a string of diamonds across Gisele Bündchen’s locks nearly a decade and a half before the look hit the runways. While headpieces are a little more subdued this season, the message remains the same: Jewels are just as appropriate perched on your head as they are on your finger. From the simple gold half rings that encircled the backs of models’ heads at Balenciaga’s Spring ’13 show to Chloë Sevigny’s Rodarte headband, a little sparkle in your locks never looked better.

Bird On A Wire

-------

More and more, Rodarte’s Laura and Kate Mulleavy are known almost as much for the hair accessories that accompany their unique designs as the designs themselves. First came Spring 2011′s hand-carved barrettes that Odile Gilbert slipped onto one side of models’ manes; then there was Fall 2011′s gilded comb moment, which was followed by those much-discussed shooting-star clips from Fall 2012 and, most recently, the barbwire headbands turned crowns that turned up at the sister duo’s Fall 2013 show. Coveted as these pieces are, however, it’s the rare A-lister who typically gets to wear them. Kirsten Dunst has received the honor on more than a few occasions, and it looks like the torch has now been passed to Chloë Sevigny. At last night’s Absolut Elyx launch in New York, the actress sported one of the thin, interwoven-metal bands as well as a full look from the Fall collection. Lucky girl. Thoughts on the accessory’s off-runway debut?

Bands, Bows, Berets—Oh My!

-------

As previously mentioned, hair accessories were a huge hit on the Spring runways—and already appear to be having a trickle-down effect on the paparazzi circuit. Blake Lively sent the blogosphere abuzz with the tiniest of diamond-encrusted headbands to celebrate Chanel’s Bijoux de Diamants 80th anniversary on Tuesday, and last night, we spotted not one but two moments of strand adornment. Fall Miu Miu face Chloë Sevigny sported a studded beret at Opening Ceremony’s London store debut, and Lana Del Rey wore a thin red bow to the premiere of her new video for “Ride” in Santa Monica. Perhaps uncoincidentally, neither wore much makeup, which is the biggest boon of concentrating beauty flair on your hair. Thoughts on their respective locks looks?

Eau De Nicki Minaj Is Coming; Ah, That New IPhone Smell; And More…

-------

Nicki Minaj has partnered with Give Back Brands, the same people behind Justin Bieber’s best-selling fragrance empire, to create her own scent that will hit shelves in the fall. The rap superstar plans to be very “involved” in the actual fragrance notes and will design the bottle with “[her] Barbz in mind.” [WWD]

Earlier this month, we reported on Chloë Sevigny’s new, blond-again shag, which, according to the actress, is worn best sans shampoo. “With this cut, the dirtier the better,” she says of her latest trim job, which came courtesy of hairstylist Ashley Javier. Going for that “just-rolled-out-of-bed look,” Sevigny relies on Kiehl’s Formula 133 and Kérastase Mousse Volumactive as styling aids. [T]

If you are still on board the dip-dyeing trend (still?), there’s a quick and easy, noncommittal way to go pink or baby blue: chalk. The sidewalk drawing staple apparently works wonders on hair for a temporary dose of pastel color. [WP]

As part of a fragrance installation, an Australian-based art collective called Greatest Hits has sought to bottle the scent of Apple’s best-selling products. Essences of plastic wrap, printed ink on cardboard, glue, rubber, and aluminum are all included in the experimental eau. [Time]

Move over, boob jobs. Chin implants, or “chinplants,” as they’re referred to by those in the know, are the latest craze in plastic surgery. [American Society of Plastic Surgeons]

Chloë Sevigny Does The Shag

-------

Chloë Sevigny will forever be gutsy when it comes to her fashion and beauty choices. After trading in her ultra-dark tresses for a floppy, flaxen bob earlier this year, the actress switched things up yet again at last night’s Jeffrey Fashion Cares show, where she was an honorary chair. Wearing a Proenza Schouler Fall look, the indie star debuted a shorter shag cut with choppy, tousled layers and peroxide highlights. The new ‘do takes us back to her mid-nineties heyday, when Larry Clark’s Kids put her on map. What do you think of the look?
