Beauty Etiquetter: Stop Getting Bullied Into Buying At The Spa

-------

Beauty Etiquetter is a new column on Beauty Counter in which we address your beauty protocol predicaments with candid advice from industry experts and those in-the-know. To submit a question, e-mail celia _ellenberg@condenast.com.

The Quandary: “How can I avoid the hard sell when my facialist has a list of ‘recommended products’ I should buy after a treatment?”

The Expert in Residence: Christine Chin, facialist and founder of Christine Chin Spa

The Advice: “There is a difference between an honest recommendation and a hard sell, which should not be hard for you to differentiate. A recommendation will only be the products you need—or are missing from your regimen—versus a whole, entire skincare line that will probably replace everything you are using now. Always ask for samples if they are available. If you are not looking to purchase any products after your treatment, simply tell the facialist you are not interested. You could also tell her that you have something at home that you like or works well for you and would like to finish it before deciding to switch lines. Your facialist should respect your decision and only give recommendations when you are ready.”
