Throwback Thursday is a column on Beauty Counter in which we pore over the pages of our favorite glossies from decades past in search of a little modern-day makeup and hair inspiration.
The Model: Christy Turlington Burns
The Moment: Wet Hair
The Motivation: We admit we’re huge Christy Turlington Burns fans, but right now it seems the whole fashion world is, too. From Harper’s Bazaar‘s U.S. June/July cover to a new Calvin Klein underwear ad (where she reprises her role from the late eighties), this original super is proving that the nineties really are back. Not only does the above Nick Knight-lensed shot provide one more example of how gorgeous this top model is, but it highlights another trend: wet hair. We spotted damp strands (considered one of hairstylist Guido Palau’s trademark looks) on the Fall runways at Prada, Marni, and Giambattista Valli. A dip in the pool (or in the case of today’s NYC weather, getting caught in the rain) never looked so chic.
In the male-dominated world of fashion, where successful female designers are seriously outnumbered, Donna Karan has managed to build a decade-spanning empire fueled by girl power. “I believe women are complex and full of emotion and feelings,” Karan says of the principles that guide her, whether she’s designing a collection for her stalwart fan base—or a fragrance. Her latest scent is a tribute to these longtime admirers. Simply called Woman, it was created through an exercise in sisterhood: Celebrated female perfumer Anne Flipo blended the orange flower, Haitian vetiver, and sandalwood eau; renowned Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid lent her skills to a new version of Karan’s iconic Cashmere Mist flacon, originally designed in 1994 by her late husband, the sculptor Stephan Weiss; and a trio of well-loved, multigenerational catwalkers, including Karolina Kurkova, Liya Kebede, and Christy Turlington-Burns, star in the Inez & Vinoodh-lensed ad campaign. Needless to say, it arrives on shelves this month with a roar, not a whisper.
L’Oréal spokeswoman Gwen Stefani has revealed that her signature platinum blond hair comes, perhaps unsurprisingly, straight from the L’Oréal hair color box. “But I won’t reveal the number,” the rock goddess said, admitting that she does her roots “as often as Marilyn Monroe did hers.” [USA Today]
Maybelline face Christy Turlington Burns is training for the New York marathon, and in addition to taking leisurely 21-mile jogs on the weekends, the supermodel has found another new favorite past time: eating carbs. “That’s my job right now,” she says. [WWD]
First there was a beauty line, and now Italian illustrator Simone Legno’s Tokidoki is getting its own Barbie. Staying true to the skate punk-meets-anime culture that spawned the brand in the first place, the doll has been designed with manga tattoos and a frosty pink bob. Needless to say, Skipper is terrified. [Daily Mail]
