Kiehl’s, a New York City staple for more than 160 years, is famous for its no-frills products designed to pamper and protect from head to toe. Now, just in time for the holidays, the brand is coming to the rescue once again, this time by answering the age-old question of what to buy for the man in your life. Enter the Dopp Kit: a limited-edition travel set produced in collaboration with Ruffian design duo Brian Wolk and Claude Morais. The kit contains a refreshing facial mist, a purifying hand treatment, and eucalyptus lip relief—all specially developed to safeguard against harsh in-flight conditions that can wreak havoc on his delicate skin. And if that isn’t enough indulgence, after more than a decade in the biz, the Ruffians are reprising one of the first products they ever introduced: a special-edition silk moirétie. Handmade in NYC, the neckwear is stamped with the label’s signature crest (which is composed entirely out of Swarovski crystals).
And if your guy is looking less than dapper during party season, send him straight to the beauty brand’s first full-service barbershop and store in Hell’s Kitchen, where this item is retailing exclusively. Opening today, midtown’s newest gentlemen’s quarters features two chairs designed by artist and motorcycle builder Paul Cox and a Skin Profile Diagnostic device (a machine that assesses everything from sebum levels to pore size via 3-D imagery technology).

Ruffian designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais are no strangers to collaboration—partnering with Frye, Moscot, and Foco coconut water alone for Fall 2013. They also have a strong passion for cosmetics and nails; in the past they’ve joined forces with MAC Cosmetics to create a limited-edition trio of lipsticks and the chicest press-ons we’ve ever laid eyes on (inspired by the tips seen on their catwalk). As for their signature nail art—a two-toned, reverse moon design—they said, “It is an essential part of the Ruffian DNA. [The manicure] is modern, edgy, punk, and a nod to the past.”
Now Wolk and Morais are taking things into their own hands and creating a branded line of lacquers—available exclusively on Birchbox.com starting today. Back in February, the Web site asked consumers to cast their votes on Facebook for The Crowdsourced Collection, a set of three shades decided on by the label’s followers. The designers discovered that bold, fashion-forward colors dominated, and hence Delirium (a shimmery purple), Fox Hunt (an iridescent orange), and Hedge Fund (a money green) were born. We caught up with the dynamic duo for a quick Q&A on their latest beauty brainchild:
What motivated you to create your own nail colors?
“We were inspired by the thousands of fans of the Ruffian Manicure. We have always had a passion for nails since our very first collection, and the Ruffian Manicure has evolved from a simple design concept to an Internet phenomenon. When we Googled ‘Ruffian Manicure’ we were thrilled to see thousands of images and tutorials in every language under the sun. We knew we had to give our fans the real thing!”
The bottle shape is quite unique. How did you come up with that?
“In terms of the bottles, we wanted something that was fresh, modern, and never seen before. We are always inspired by our girlfriends’ vanities and wanted to create a bottle that was worthy of display. Deco is something we always look at for our collection, and it inspired our Ruffian crest, so when creating our signature cap that was definitely a design influence. The ball cap also allows great control for nail art details, which was important to our fans.”
How did you choose the shades that comprise The Classics Collection?
“Ruffian Red, Ruffian Naked, and Ciré Noir are our classics—timeless and perfect for every Ruffian girl, whether she’s naughty or nice. They are colors that always appear on our runway.”
If you had to choose, what is your must-have shade in the line?
“That would be like asking a parent to pick his favorite child! But we are very excited about The Crowdsourced Collection that will appear in our runway show on September 7.”

Back in February, we had the pleasure of breaking the news that Ruffian’s Brian Wolk and Claude Morais were collaborating with MAC on a capsule collection that began with the re-release of Ruffian Red, a deep crimson lipstick the two brands created together three years ago—and which made its triumphant runway return for Fall. Four months later, and MAC x Ruffian is debuting exclusively online today, with two additional lip colors—Ruffian Gold, a frosty gilded glitter bullet, and Ruffian Naked, a matte pale peach—as well as a riff on another beauty statement the design duo has decisively made its own: the moon manicure. Wolk and Morais embraced embellished tips long before the nail art movement became a compulsory part of the backstage beauty game, and we’re happy to report that their dedication to highly designed tips has been translated into three different press-on patterns: Spectator is a cream base with a black half moon, black tip, and black Ruffian insignia (which should look plenty familiar to anyone who attended the house’s Spring 2011 show); Demoiselle boasts a red base with a white half moon and black French tip; and Demilune features matte black nails with a chrome gold half moon. Best to get while the getting’s good.
Ruffian fans the world over presumably look back on Brian Wolk and Claude Morais’ Fall 2009 show fondly. Their polished collection that season was capped off by a limited-edition makeup collaboration with MAC Cosmetics that resulted in Ruffian Red, a bold crimson lipstick that was used in the show and sold for a brief time afterward. Well, we’ve got some good news for those of you still scraping the last bits of pigment out of the pout perfector’s original bullet: Ruffian Red will be back on the catwalk at the designers’ Fall 2012 show tomorrow and has inspired a full-scale range of face-painting products created by the two brands. Mum’s still the word as far as what will be included in the line when it debuts in June, but there is one thing we can tell you: Ruffian’s now-legendary moon manicure (Wolk and Marais commission one every season) will be represented “in a way MAC has never done before,” according to our sources.
