Katy Perry: Killer Queen; Gwyneth Paltrow Worships the Sun; Laser Hair Removal Red Flags; and More

Katy PerryKaty Perry opened up to WWD about her new fragrance, Killer Queen (named after the song), due out in August. “Freddie Mercury painted the lyrics of this woman who I wanted to be. She seemed very powerful, and she captivated a room when she walked in,” Perry said. She went on to jokingly call her new business partner, Coty, “Daddy Warbucks” and touched on the possibility of starting a fashion line one day. “I’m not saying I’ll be good at all of it, but I’m going to swing.”

Helen Mirren’s still got it. The 67-year-old actress has a better bikini bod than many women half her age and still likes to have fun with her beauty routine. During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show, Jay Leno showed Mirren a recent picture of herself with pink hair. She explained her color change was inspired by a contestant on America’s Next Top Model who kept switching her hair between blonde and pink. “Obviously, I got the idea that it washes out very easily, so I thought it would be fun to have pink hair.” Rock on, Helen.

Readers were taken aback when Gwyneth Paltrow, seemingly the healthiest person on the planet, disagreed with doctors and endorsed (gasp) tanning in a recent British Cosmopolitan interview. “We’re human beings, and the sun is the sun—how can it be bad for you? I think we should all get sun and fresh air,” Paltrow said. “I don’t think anything that is natural can be bad for you—it’s really good to have at least fifteen minutes of sun a day.”

A study in Boston found that the smoke given off during laser-hair-removal procedures contains harmful toxins and chemicals that could put both humans and animals in danger. Dr. Gary S. Chuang looked into the problem after noticing a “foul,” sulfuric odor the smoke emitted each time he performed laser hair removal. The potentially game-changing results of his research will be published in a medical journal shortly. Until then, it’s not-so-smooth sailing for spas and salons offering the service.

Jessica Chastain has made the cut. The Help star and recently named YSL fragrance face has lopped off her fiery red, shoulder-length locks into a mod-era bob for her role in the sixties flick, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Chanel Beauty’s much-discussed London pop-up shop opened yesterday in Covent Garden. Among its many makes-you-wish-you-were-in-the-U.K. features is a downstairs nail salon where you can get manicures with a host of the brand’s coveted polishes—as well as consultations with local nail-artist icons, like Sophy Robson and Marian Newman. Coty CEO Bernd Beetz has announced plans to retire at the end of the month after leading the brand that put celebrity fragrances on the map for over a decade. As Beetz was responsible for wrangling superstars Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, and David Beckham and luring them over to the business of beauty, it’s safe to assume that he’s going to have one hell of a good-bye party. Breaking: Madonna, Marni Get Into The Fragrance Game

We’re taking a quick break from our backstage beauty duties to bring you some good tidings from the perfume world: Marni has just inked a deal with Estée Lauder, which will assume fragrance licenses for Consuelo Castiglioni’s quirky Italian house effective immediately. The first scent won’t bow until next year, but you better believe we’ll be waiting with bated breath until then; if Castiglioni’s beauty aptitude is anywhere near her prowess with prints and fashion-meets-art shapes and textures, her forthcoming flacon will be among our favorites for Fall 2012. It will have some stiff competition in the form of a rumored scent from Madonna, though, as the Material Girl is reportedly in talks to launch a signature scent with Coty. Seeing as how Coty basically owns the celebrity and designer fragrance game, producing scents for Beyoncé, Marc Jacobs, and Balenciaga among a slew of others, eau de Madge will no doubt impress, so stay tuned. It looks like Heidi Klum will be the next reality star to lend her name to a fragrance. The blonde German model-cum-Project Runway hostess plans to release Shine with Coty Beauty in September. [WWD]

After denying rumors of a buyout, OPI has indeed been bought by Coty, to the tune of about $1 billion. Following L’Oréal’s estimated $50 million deal with Essie earlier this year (not to mention a couple of high-profile designer collaborations for CND and Sally Hansen), we’d say the nail business is booming. Emma Watson has promised she won’t be hawking perfume with her name on it anytime soon, but Nicki Minaj, for one, is ready to board the celebrity fragrance train. After the debut of her Pink Friday lipstick for MAC Cosmetics last week, the hip-hop heroine is reportedly hoping to add a signature scent (as well as films and a clothing line) to her budding empire. You already know about Victoria Beckham’s body-hugging, bold-shouldered fashion preferences. Now Tatler has revealed her beauty secrets. The designer prefers hair conditioners from Frédéric Fekkai, Stila’s Lip Polish in Gleam, and nail polishes form Chanel. She also claims to be over her days of self-tanner abuse, a look she admits is “a bit footballer’s wife.” That bronzed glow now comes from the Southern California sun and a slathering of Nivea Body Lotion.
