Beauty Nostalgia: Reminiscing With…Jeannia Robinette


Beauty Nostalgia is a new weekly column on Beauty Counter in which we ask influencers, tastemakers, and some of our favorite industry experts to wax poetic on the sticks, salves, and sprays that helped shape who they are today.

The Pro: Jeannia Robinette, celebrity makeup artist.

The Product: “The first big makeup shoot I did was for Davidoff fragrance. It was shot by Michael Thompson in Anguilla with the model Yamila Diaz-Rahi. I got the storyboard for the shoot and found out the entire scene was all underwater—like crashing waves, pounding surf, all underwater. I looked at the makeup notes and they just said, ‘make sure the makeup doesn’t run.’ I was like, you’ve got to be kidding! I decided I needed to do major research so I ordered every single waterproof mascara in the world, from the most expensive French brands to the cheapest drugstore ones. I tried hundreds in my apartment in New York by filling the bathtub with water and dunking my head. Then I’d apply the mascara and dunk my head again and again. I finally found one that really worked—L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara. It has a jet black color with a thick consistency that gives you volume and length. And it seriously does not budge in water. We ended up shooting for two weeks and this mascara saved my life. Yamila came rolling out of the water, sand all over her, but there were no smudges. I think Michael was definitely impressed! I still use this mascara to this day. I like to apply it at the base of the upper lashes and pull it through, then take the tip of the wand to coat the bottom lashes and brush them out with a lash comb. To make it really perfect, I take a gel eyeliner brush and fill in what I can’t get with the mascara wand.”

Davidoff’s Carnal Encounter


One of our earliest scent memories was actually of cologne, not perfume. It came during our pubescent years, when racy ad images of toned, shirtless men made us fast fans of Davidoff’s Cool Water. One whiff of the stuff and it was settled: The imaginary boyfriend we conjured in our head—a tall, preppy jock type—would indeed smell of lavender, jasmine, and oakmoss, with a hint of musk and sandalwood. Davidoff’s latest offering promises to, um, steam things up even more. Hot Water is set to launch at the end of the month, according to WWD, packing what its press materials promise will be “burning, latent heat.” Featured notes of absinthe, red basil, pimento, and patchouli apparently help achieve this effect, as does a new ad campaign shot by photographer Matthew Brookes. It’s the same naked-bodies-rolling-around-on-the-beach theme from 20 years ago, but somehow hotter. Click above to watch.

Angel Gets Its Wings Clipped


In 1992, Thierry Mugler was something of a demigod. In addition to costuming George Michael’s epic“Too Funky” video, he unleashed Angel onto the world, sending women all over the globe into a gourmand-oriental-twinged frenzy. Even if you didn’t wear Angel, it’s likely you still associate its overpowering patchouli top notes with that specific era of your life. You may have been dabbling in Davidoff or Miyake, but everyone else was bathing in Mugler. After 16 years and a cult following that you can still smell in a crowded room, the French designer is staging an olfactory comeback of sorts with Angel Les Parfums Corps, a complete body-care line formulated with a new technology that lets you apply his classic scent to your skin in a variety of long-lasting textures—gel, cream, lotion, oil, mist, and spray, each with the staying power of an eau de parfum. The line will be available in stores this fall, but the new as-yet-unreleased-to-the-public commercial, starring Naomi Watts, is exclusively available for your viewing pleasure here.
