A Downton Abbey Duo

It was a night of firsts for Downton Abbey actress, Michelle Dockery: Her first full-on red lip for a red carpet and her first time wearing J. Mendel. She also sported a ponytail-like low-do—a move we rarely see the star known for her bob (which she is currently growing out) make. “We were going for a modern-day—but French—Bianca Jagger,” said makeup artist Jordan Long of Dockery’s look at the SAG Awards. “The hair and makeup are French, but the tuxedo [dress] is a nod to the seventies,” she explained.

Long began by prepping Dockery’s skin with moisturizer and topping the T-zone with Visionnaire [1 Minute Blur], a primer-like product launching in March laced with silicone elastomers for a soft-focus finish, silica silyate to control shine, bismuth oxychloride and boron nitride to boost radiance, and a cocktail of anti-aging ingredients (like LHA and vitamin Cg) to fight fine lines. “I’m never heavy-handed with Michelle because she doesn’t need it,” the face painter said of the light, custom-blended foundation she used to perfect the actress’ already flawless, fair complexion. Brows were filled in and translucent setting powder was dusted all over before a peachy-pink blush was placed on the apples and layered with bronzer.

Next up: lids, which were coated with a combo shimmery taupe and mauve shadows. A thin band of black liner was used to define the eyes, then Artliner 24H in Gold was run above it and along the lower lash lines—providing the same highlighting effect as the often-used, white-eye-shadow-around-the-tear-duct trick.

Before reaching for a red lip pencil, Long did a “test lip,” in which she applied just “a hint” of lipstick on so that she and Dockery could get an idea as to what the finished product will look like. To make it last, she etched out the shape and filled in the entire mouth with Le Crayon in Garnet, then layered Color Design Lipstick in Red Addiction over top with a brush. To mattify, Long ran over the entire mouth once more with the lip pencil—making the color not only completely opaque, but budge-proof. As the last step, three coats of mascara were used on top and bottom, and “loads” of individual false lashes were applied for even more drama. “For me, mascara and individuals take [the makeup] to the next level,” she said.

Dockery’s co-star, Laura Carmichael, also opted to pull her hair back, but decided on a high chignon in lieu of a low pony. Hairstylist Blake Burkholder, inspired by the sleek look often seen on Gucci’s runways, blew her damp hair back and ran John Frieda Frizz Ease Six Effects Serum through strands. Next, he gathered the hair to the top of the crown and secured it with a strong elastic. “You almost want it to hurt a little bit,” Burkholder said. After coiling the tail and wrapping it around the base, he secured the style with French pins. To make the bun “less ballerina,” he roughed it up with Sheer Blonde Crystal Clear Shape & Shimmer Hairspray and used a tiny bit of oil for sheen.

In terms of beauty, it was a win for both Brits.

Downton Abbey: The Makeup; L.A. Says Auf Wiedersehen to Heidi Klum Ad; Beyoncé Flaunts It

Flaunt_Beyonce_01An “Edwardian-themed” Downton Abbey makeup collection will be released on October 12, just in time for season four. The creams, candles, and makeup products will sell exclusively at London’s Marks & Spencer. Packaging is stamped with the Downton Arms, images of the Abbey, and quotes from the series.

Heidi Klum’s new “Fashion Reigns” ad campaign for Project Runway has been banned in L.A. The billboard depicts Klum and Tim Gunn dressed as royalty, standing over a group of naked, writhing models. The City of Angels has asked that a new version be produced with models wearing underwear. Interestingly enough, New York has not found a problem with the nude photos.

Beyoncé is nearly naked herself, and covered in metallic glitter on the new issue of Flaunt. Bow Down, indeed.
