Mélanie Laurent’s Sauvage Beauty

-------

Cannes master of ceremonies Mélanie Laurent stars in our Beauty Essentials feature today, and it’s no surprise that the very Parisian, very chic star of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds keeps a lot of Dior in her makeup bag. The blonde actress is the newly minted face of the house’s Hypnotic Poison scent, after all. “It’s very flattering when you’re asked to join the ranks of Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich, Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman, and Marion Cotillard,” Laurent says of the spokeswomen who have come before her and who are still tied to the brand. Lending her talents to a print campaign wasn’t all that different from taking on a film project, though, Laurent tells us. “It isn’t a transition—it’s the same for me. The Hypnotic Poison woman is a little bit like me but not entirely, which is why embodying her means acting. I like the idea of playing her as a character,” Laurent says of the mysterious and bewitching image that the bitter almond, caraway spice, sambac jasmine, cinnamon, and tuberose eau evokes. As for her past fragrance trysts, there have been many—”I’m French, so perfume is part of my culture”—but her first love was Eau Sauvage, Dior’s hit men’s fragrance from the sixties. “It was my father’s favorite perfume,” Laurent explains. “I had the impression that wearing this strong, masculine perfume helped me affirm myself.” Click here to get an insider’s look at all of Mélanie’s go-to products.
