Freja For Maybelline; MObama’s Persuasive Polish; and More…

Fashionphiles wondering where Freja Beha Erichsen has been for the past few seasons will be relieved to know that the Chanel and Valentino muse has been busy negotiating a gigantic new beauty contract. The Danish supe has just been named the new face of Maybelline. [WWD]

Child star-turned-fashion star Elle Fanning has also nabbed a beauty contract and will star in a new film for Lolita Lempicka’s signature women’s scent. [WWD]

Lana Del Rey is the latest high-profile star to embrace fall’s severe brunette dye job, coloring her long, golden brown locks a shade of deep coffee. [Glamour]

The big star of last night’s round of Democratic National Convention speeches wasn’t Michelle Obama—it was her nails. The greige color sent the Twitterverse into overdrive as MObama fans—and political pundits!—tried to guess her preferred polish. [Jezebel]

Fashion’s Tattoo Addicts, Baby Skincare Junkies, And Madonna, Still Sexy After All These Years

Freja Beha Erichsen, Marc Jacobs, Victoria Beckham—all tattoo collectors. Trends come and go in a blink, but many fashion lifers can’t seem to get enough permanent ink. Refinery 29 created a guide to their favorite industry insiders’ body art. Check out Pamela Love’s seeing eye and Anna Sheffield’s Sanskrit stamps, among others. [Refinery 29]

L’Oréal opened its largest hair research center ever outside of Paris. It will house all sorts of innovative technology, as well as top chemists, scientists, and statisticians in the field. What it means for you: user-friendly hair dyes in a wider range of shades and more environmentally sound products. [WWD]

The baby skincare business is booming, growing more than 180 percent in the past three years. Choosy moms want the best nontoxic products for their infants, and that often means shelling out hundreds for cult brands like Mustela and California Baby. Apparently it’s never too early to become a product junkie. [NYT]

Madonna has always pushed boundaries with concerts, music videos, and crazy getups. Now she’s doing the same with the racy ads for her new Truth or Dare fragrance. The scent—”narcotic florals balanced with wood and vanilla”—is available exclusively at Macy’s in April and will launch worldwide in May. Her new MDNA album may be a little flat musically, but this campaign reassures us that when it comes to being a sex icon, Madge has still got it! [Daily Mail]

Spring Valentino In Hollywood For Fall

There’s nothing we like more here at Beauty Counter than seeing our favorite backstage beauty moments played out on the red carpet; it takes a really savvy starlet (and her stylist) to realize that plucking a dress from the catwalk for the premiere circuit is much more impactful if you bring the accompanying hair and makeup look along with it. Last night’s 15th Annual Hollywood Film Awards gala in Los Angeles provided us with a doozy. There was Elle Fanning, not only wearing look four, hot off the Valentino Spring runway, but also rocking the coronet of braids that Guido Palau wove around Freja Beha Erichsen’s pretty little head. We haven’t seen a full package homage this good since Kate Bosworth borrowed Peter Philips neon pink lip from the last Spring’s Jil Sander show to wear with Raf Simon’s floor-grazing skirt. What do you think of Fanning’s runway to reality adaptation?

Eau de Nine West; A Nail Line For Nicki; And More…

Nine West is the latest accessories brand to enter the beauty market with its first signature scent, Love Fury. In case you were wondering whether or not there’d be a shoe reference in there, the answer is yes. The flacon has a stiletto heel topper. [WWD]

First came Nicki Minaj’s limited-edition lipstick with MAC, and now the rap star with a thing for wigs is debuting the next logical step in her makeup maneuvers: a nail polish collection with OPI. We’re going to assume a perfume is not so far off. [Fashionista]

Gwyneth Paltrow was a guest on Dr. Fredric Brandt’s new satellite radio show this week, where she revealed a few of her tried and tested beauty secrets: drink lots of water, take vitamins “religiously,” have one homemade green juice and eat a lean protein every day, and—most importantly—get your beauty sleep. “For me, sleep is a major thing. I don’t always get it, and when I don’t, I look like I’ve been hit by a truck,” the GOOP creator insists. [The Stir]

Anything Freja Beha Erichsen is into, we are on board with. Watch the Danish supe talk about the making of her commercial for Valentino’s new fragrance, Valentina—and fall just a little more in love with her. [My Fashion Life]

Talking Undercuts With Freja Beha Erichsen, Supermodel And Activist

As we made our way around the steamy backstage area at the InterContinental Paris Le Grand Hôtel for Balmain this afternoon, we spotted something unexpected as models meandered around makeup artist Tom Pecheux and coiffing star Sam McKnight’s respective stations (more on that in a bit)—namely one Freja Beha Erichsen. Erichsen skipped New York, London, and Milan for Spring, making Balenciaga her season opener earlier this morning. And not only was Erichsen there, in the flesh, about to get her hair done, but she was rocking a freshly shaved undercut. “Sam did it for me,” Freja said when we inquired about the eighties-era punk mainstay that’s having a bit of a moment of late. “He did it a couple of months ago but just touched it up today. It’s complicated stuff,” she joked of the style that simply requires a razor and a devil-may-care attitude. It turns out Erichsen wanted to talk about the complicated stuff. “I’m trying to get everyone to donate a day’s salary on October 4 to Doctors Without Borders,” the Danish stunner told about a charity initiative she has taken up. “I’ve always admired what they do around the world as first responders—and in some cases the only responders,” she added.
