Headbands: The Unisex Trend of the Summer

It isn’t every day we come across a gender-bending beauty trend. (Let’s just say we don’t know many guys who would get in on the bleached brow or smoky eye action we’ve seen recently.) But this month’s menswear shows and sporting events surprisingly made a case for headbands. At Bottega Veneta, male models’ messy strands were held in place by simple black bands—a nod to dancers, according to designer Tomas Maier. On the World Cup pitch, Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani swept back his signature long locks with a similar accessory. And at Wimbledon, Rafael Nadal wore a classic white Nike sweatband. This is one look we’ll definitely be borrowing from the boys.

Are Seussian Headbands Summer’s New Flower Crown?

Festival season provided us with plenty of flower crowns to marvel at, but this weekend’s Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic gave us hats…and over-the-top headbands—the latter of which we are currently obsessed with. In particular, the whimsical creations belonging to actress Kate Greer, Caitlin Moe of The Dolls, and stylist Cleo Wade. Why don a chapeau when giant butterflies and hummingbirds provide plenty of cover? We also love that the trio is propagating the dark lip for summer—a moody makeup move that expertly contrasts crisp whites.

Why You Should Revisit This Sixth-Grade Hair Accessory

laura-love-cropLaura Love always errs on the edgy side, opting for smudged eyeliner and a motorcycle jacket for last night’s red carpet premier of Palo Alto, but her black headband was a surprisingly sweet addition. Save for Lupita Nyong’o's sparkler at the Oscars, skinny headbands haven’t crossed our minds for the better part of a decade. But now we’re wondering…why not? You would be hard-pressed to find a better tool for keeping hair out of your eyes, tamping down fly-aways, and adding some polish to messy waves. Turns out we had it right back in middle school—in terms of accessorizing, at least.

Flashback Friday: Banding Together

kim-rennebergFlashback Friday is a feature on Beauty Counter in which we pore over the pages of our favorite glossies from decades past in search of a little modern-day makeup and hair inspiration.

The Model: Kim Renneberg

The Moment: Pastel Wigs and Graphic Headbands

The Motivation: There are a number of things about this shot that caught our eye: for starters, the lush lashes (a huge trend for Fall 2014) and a supermarché backdrop (à la Chanel’s jaw-dropping set). But perhaps the most striking similarity to this season’s catwalks are Renneberg’s pale strands and thick headband—a duo we saw at Marc Jacobs’ show in New York just a few short weeks ago. The only difference: Where the stretchy accessory contrasts the nearly white wig in this nineties editorial, the current way to wear it is more tone on tone.

Flowers In Her Hair, Flowers Everywhere

Sometimes, usually when you’ve put off washing your hair for a little too long, it’s gotta be a headband day. But for this student, every day is a headband day. “They’re my favorite accessories. I wear them all the time,” she confesses. And well she should, with results like this.
