This past summer, we were pleasantly surprised by Hearts & Stars, coiffing star Jason Harsin’s Hawaiian hair import that made its way all the way over to our desk on the East Coast and promptly wowed us with its sulfate- and paraben-free cleansing and conditioning capabilities. Using a special blend of eucalyptus, tea tree, and sage extracts to impart a squeaky clean, but never drying, feel to the scalp, the adorable, sunglasses-emblazoned bottles also pack a keratin and hemp-oil punch, which swathed our sun- and salt-water-ravaged hair with moisture. Originally formulated for his wave-riding clientele, Harsin still had beach bums on the brain again when he devised his latest product development: a naturally derived Bath and Body Gel. Launching today, which some would argue is the unofficial start of the resort season, the soothing wash is similarly devoid of parabens and sulfates, bolstered instead by vitamins C and E, aloe vera, jojoba oil, and protein to balance skin tone, hydrate parched limbs, and protect and repair environmental damage. Not going anywhere tropical over the next few months? Not to worry. The logo’s bright green, heart-shaped shades add a hint of “beach holiday” to even the most landlocked of showers.
With its tropical, lush green landscape, Hawaii is the epicenter of natural scents and salves. From the popular Kona Red antioxidant-boosted energy drink and skin-soothing mango “butter buns” to a few local niche fragrance lines from brands like Saffron James, the Aloha State has plenty to offer when it comes to primping. And while Paul Mitchell’s fully sustainable, solar-powered Awapuhi farm has been the big hair story on the Big Island for the past 20 years, stylist Jason Harsin is fixing to make his mark in the business of beautiful locks. After struggling to find a product range to help his clients replenish the protein that’s often lost when hair is exposed to sun, sand, and surf, Harsin created Hearts & Stars, a two-piece offering that launched last month. The second thing you’ll notice about the sulfate- and paraben-free shampoo and conditioner is their impressive olfactory attributes; essences of eucalyptus, tea tree, and sage disperse a fresh scent as you lather, rinse, and repeat. The next thing you’ll pick up on is how squeaky clean your scalp is without feeling dry—the happy effect of a formula boosted with keratin and hemp oil to replenish, rather than strip, damaged strands. But what will no doubt be the first thing to catch your eye is Harsin’s adorable, tattoo-influenced packaging concept that features every girl’s favorite kitschy accessory: a pair of heart-shaped sunglasses. In case you were wondering, the answer is yes; they look amazing in any well-appointed shower caddy.
