As someone who spent much of her formative years in the ’90s, I’m no stranger to a high pony. For those of you who were there, a conical clip might be the tool that comes to mind. And for those who missed the illustrious decade, let me fill you in on this magical accessory: It was essentially a plastic grip that you would clip over the base of your ponytail to jack up the height. (Madonna was a fan of the look during the Blond Ambition tour.) While the hair helper has gone the way of the Walkman, the towering tail is very much on trend—just ask Cara Delevingne or Jessica Alba. Even Jennifer Lopez gathered her strands high and tight for the cover of her latest single (the aptly titled “Booty”), which she released on Instagram today. To update this throwback, skip the plastic and make like Delevingne, Alba, and the models at Stine Ladefoged’s show during Copenhagen fashion week (seen below): Anchor your pony near the crown of your head and wrap a small section of hair around the elastic for a sleek and thoroughly modern finish.
Moody, bordeaux lips continue to make a statement on the red carpet, the latest example being Jessica Alba (who also debuted a new, shoulder-grazing cut) at last night’s Hollywood Stands Up to Cancer event in Culver City, California. Lipstick queen Lupita Nyong’o sported a similar shade at the recent Producers Guild of America Awards in Beverly Hills. Both actors contrasted the deep shade with light-colored dresses and lots of (considering that it’s still January) glowy skin. Nyong’o’s makeup man Nick Barose said that the key to pulling off the rich hue is to make sure that your formula has a “hint of sheen,” and to add a touch of luminescence to your complexion—like the golden highlights he placed above her Cupid’s bow and on the center of her chin. One of his go-to tubes: Tom Ford Lip Color in Black Orchid.

As the fallout from Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Most Beautiful” title continues to play out, more and more details are surfacing about the minutiae of her extensive diet-and-exercise regimen. Tracy Anderson Method is in, as we discussed yesterday, as is aerial yoga. Running, however, is a firm no. “Tracy says it builds square quads in a woman, better to do dancing,” says Paltrow. As for her skincare regimen, it’s all about Ilia organic oils. “I am obsessed,” she says. [Elle UK]
While Paltrow’s regimen made her post-pregnancy journey back to the perfect body look easy, Jessica Alba chose a slimming road less traveled. “I wore a double corset, day and night, for three months,” she reveals of her struggle to lose weight following the birth of her daughter Honor. “It was sweaty but worth it.” [Net-A-Porter]
Butter London, the cheeky British nail brand responsible for No More Waity, Katie, a lilac glitter greige polish created in homage of Kate Middleton’s engagement to Prince William, has just announced the launch of Pitter Patter. Salma Hayek is making some smart business decisions with her CVS-stocked beauty brand, Nuance. If you’re hoping to get a svelte body like Mila Kunis’, the likelihood is you won’t be able to with a single body salve alone, even if it is Rodial’s Body Sculpture Cream—which is why the UK has banned ads for the product featuring the Black Swan star in the buff, citing “deceptive” marketing techniques. Wrangler is indeed serious about its new line of jeans that moisturize your legs while you wear them—so serious, they’ve hired a spokesmodel for the Denim Spa range: Lizzie Jagger. [Contact Music]

Live! With Kelly and Michael star Kelly Ripa has revealed that she gets Botox injections every seven months so her eyelid skin rests on her eyelashes. “I feel like [Botox] makes my makeup artist’s life easier, and it makes my eyes look a little more open on TV, which is where I happen to work right now,” she explains. [Hollywood Life]
Jessica Alba almost always wears her hair straight and sleek—which isn’t all that surprising for a very loyal student of Narciso Rodriguez’s school of minimalist chic. It’s standard to find the Sin City star’s ombré strands blown out or slicked back into a chignon, making her wild waves at Spike TV’s Tenth Annual Video Game Awards this weekend so shocking. Adding to her honey gold, side sweep’s appeal was a bold orange mouth, the likes of which we haven’t seen since clementine lip colors were all the rage two years ago following the Spring 2011 shows. It’s enough to make us reach for our trusty tube of MAC Pro Longwear Lipcreme in Good to Go and, well, go for it. You too?
