Kerry Washington’s Blue Lids Are a New Breed of Smoke Show

66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals

There were plenty of smoke shows at the Emmys tonight—Taylor Schilling, Kate Mara, and Lizzy Caplan, to name just three—but the eyes that stood out in a sea of bronze, black, and gray belonged to Kerry Washington. Playing off the blue miniskirt underneath Washington’s fiery orange Prada gown, makeup artist Carola Gonzalez created shimmery navy lids using Dior Diorshow Fusion Mono Eyeshadow in Cosmos up into the crease and along the lower lashes, topping the azure pigment with Neutrogena Crease Proof Eye Shadow in Forever Platinum. For definition, Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Liner in Twilight Blue was applied on the inner waterline before lashes were lacquered with “four coats” of Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara. To enhance her already bulked-up fringe, a few falsies were added. “Lashes are what seal the deal,” said Gonzalez. The pro attributed the celeb’s flawless base to Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer in SX11 and sculpted cheekbones to Neutrogena Healthy Skin Custom Glow Blush & Bronzer in Raisin Glow—a “universal shade,” the face painter noted, that flatters the entire spectrum of skin tones. Washington’s nude nail polish was the inspiration for her matching lip: Neutrogena’s MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Warm Caramel. Despite all the buzz surrounding the Scandal star, and the fact that E! was predicting what she would wear down the red carpet during their prep session (all options the actress found “hilarious”), Washington wasn’t the only one the glam squad had their eyes on—4-month-old Isabelle was in tow. “She’s always the center of attention,” quipped Gonzalez. I guess a nomination, a hit television show, and svelte post-baby silhouette won’t win you everything.

@DonaldDrawbertson’s Ode to Emmy Prep

Before Violet Grey became an online and freestanding beauty empire, it was an underground hot spot for A-listers and their entourages to nail down their red-carpet looks. Paying homage to the history of the space, famed costume designer Edith Head (whose sketches are scattered throughout the store on Melrose Place), and tonight’s Emmy Awards is none other than Donald Robertson (aka @donalddrawbertson), the in-demand Instagram illustrator and second artist in residence for VG. Here, a few imaginary star-studded scenes to get you pumped up for yet another round of celeb-spotting:

Beauty Sound Bites: Not Just Skin Deep

“I am really blessed in that my mother is a beautiful woman who always took care of her skin, but she has never placed all of her value on how she looks. For her, beauty is really both an inside and outside job. She believes you have to feel good on the inside in order to really look great on the outside.”

Above, we pay homage to the Golden Globe nominee’s humble background with a throwback family photo from 1995 with her mother (Valerie) and father (Earl). Despite the Bronx native’s focus on inner beauty, we have no doubt that the newest face of Neutrogena will have a façade to match come Sunday.

A Sneak Peek at Kerry’s New Neutrogena Campaign

Kerry Washington is as brainy and beautiful as Olivia Pope, the no-nonsense character she plays on Scandal. She’s also just as powerful—except instead of D.C., we’re talking the equally political world of Hollywood. And with the Golden Globes this Sunday, all eyes will be on the pregnant star, who is nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series, Drama. We asked the mother-to-be what she’ll be doing to get ready for the big night: “I just always try to make sure I eat before I get on a red carpet, if that counts as a pre-red-carpet ritual. And I always have my phone.”

In addition to how she’ll be prepping this weekend, the star gave us an exclusive sneak peek at her first photo shoot with Neutrogena, for which she is not just a global brand ambassador, but also a creative consultant. “We are still discovering what that will mean because it is a new concept within the company, but we know it will have to do with feedback about different products, both from my own experience on the red carpet, and also at work wearing makeup and caring about the health of my skin every day—whether I’m on camera or not,” she explained. As for what this pretty face keeps in her bathroom and makeup bag, read this month’s Beauty Essentials feature to find out. Pope may know how to keep a secret, but Washington herself is more than willing to spill the details on her flawless skin, what her castmates beg for on set, and why she isn’t afraid to get her hair wet.

Pretty in Pink

Kerry WashingtonUnder normal circumstances, I wouldn’t advise coordinating your lipstick to a tiered fuchsia cocktail dress, but on Kerry Washington at last night’s fête to celebrate Emmy Award nominees, it works. (Then again, what doesn’t?) With summer officially ending this Saturday, why not break out the bright tube one last time before slicking on richer berry and burgundy tones? Just play it like Washington did here and keep the rest of your look ultra-simple with neutral shadow, lush lashes, nude nails, and pared-down accessories (like her stark white Nancy Gonzalez clutch). Suddenly, matchy-matchy feels modern again.
