Beauty Sound Bites: Not Just Skin Deep

“I am really blessed in that my mother is a beautiful woman who always took care of her skin, but she has never placed all of her value on how she looks. For her, beauty is really both an inside and outside job. She believes you have to feel good on the inside in order to really look great on the outside.”

Above, we pay homage to the Golden Globe nominee’s humble background with a throwback family photo from 1995 with her mother (Valerie) and father (Earl). Despite the Bronx native’s focus on inner beauty, we have no doubt that the newest face of Neutrogena will have a façade to match come Sunday.

A Sneak Peek at Kerry’s New Neutrogena Campaign

Kerry Washington is as brainy and beautiful as Olivia Pope, the no-nonsense character she plays on Scandal. She’s also just as powerful—except instead of D.C., we’re talking the equally political world of Hollywood. And with the Golden Globes this Sunday, all eyes will be on the pregnant star, who is nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series, Drama. We asked the mother-to-be what she’ll be doing to get ready for the big night: “I just always try to make sure I eat before I get on a red carpet, if that counts as a pre-red-carpet ritual. And I always have my phone.”

In addition to how she’ll be prepping this weekend, the star gave us an exclusive sneak peek at her first photo shoot with Neutrogena, for which she is not just a global brand ambassador, but also a creative consultant. “We are still discovering what that will mean because it is a new concept within the company, but we know it will have to do with feedback about different products, both from my own experience on the red carpet, and also at work wearing makeup and caring about the health of my skin every day—whether I’m on camera or not,” she explained. As for what this pretty face keeps in her bathroom and makeup bag, read this month’s Beauty Essentials feature to find out. Pope may know how to keep a secret, but Washington herself is more than willing to spill the details on her flawless skin, what her castmates beg for on set, and why she isn’t afraid to get her hair wet.

Pretty in Pink

Kerry WashingtonUnder normal circumstances, I wouldn’t advise coordinating your lipstick to a tiered fuchsia cocktail dress, but on Kerry Washington at last night’s fête to celebrate Emmy Award nominees, it works. (Then again, what doesn’t?) With summer officially ending this Saturday, why not break out the bright tube one last time before slicking on richer berry and burgundy tones? Just play it like Washington did here and keep the rest of your look ultra-simple with neutral shadow, lush lashes, nude nails, and pared-down accessories (like her stark white Nancy Gonzalez clutch). Suddenly, matchy-matchy feels modern again.

Beauty 411: Ursula Stephen

URSULA-STEPHEN-FINAL-2_resizeHer personal choices might often elude us, but when it comes to all things hair-related, Rihanna always has our undivided and rapt attention (like, say, last week, when she went gray, or, as she dubbed it, “brrrr”). And the woman usually responsible for RiRi’s chameleonic hair ways is stylist Ursula Stephen. Her three favorite moments in Rihanna’s hair timeline? “When we went red, the short black ’do we did for the Teen Choice Awards a couple of years ago, and the short blonde look for her ‘Hard’ music video,” she says. Besides tending to celebrity tresses (she also counts Mary J. Blige and Kerry Washington as clients) and working as a Global Ambassador for hair-care line Motions, Stephen recently opened her first salon, in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood; a thrill for those of us who call the 718 home. “I’d always thought of opening my own place, but this just feels like the right time in my life and career to do it, so when I got a call about a space, I couldn’t pass it up,” she explains. And lest you think she’s too busy to attend to us common folks, Stephen insists that though her schedule will vary from week to week, she will definitely be logging plenty of time at Ursula Stephen the Salon, 66 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, (347) 457-5834. Here, the busy stylist shares some of her own beautifying go-tos.

“At the Olympic Spa in L.A., you get scrubbed down like a baby by these superstrong women…in front of everyone! Don’t be shy about it. You will leave feeling like you have new skin!”

“This fragrance manages to be so many things at once: pretty, sophisticated, rich. And I have to say, the men love it. I first discovered it at a spa in New York, and now it’s absolutely one of my faves.”

THE GO-TO COVER-UP: Kevyn Aucoin
“Hands down the best concealer out there. It’s always a lifesaver for me.”

“I actually first discovered it after I got a bad burn from a curling iron. It helped heal that and turned out to be such a great moisturizer. I especially like it for the rough areas, like my knees and elbows. Plus, it gives skin an amazing glow.”

Available at drugstores.

“The perfect blush for summer, if you’re going for that ‘I don’t have on any makeup’ kind of look.”

THE HAIR THERAPY: Motions Deep Penetrating Treatment
“It’s the best conditioning treatment around. I recommend it to all my clients and, naturally, use it on myself religiously, too.”

Available at drugstores.

“It really is one of my favorite stores. I find all my trendy pieces there that I then mix in with designer stuff.”

“I love this place in Brooklyn. They do next-level mani-pedis! The ambience is beautiful, the staff is attentive, and every service is great. Also, mimosas. Enough said.”

Kerry Washington: A Vision In Vuitton

The past twenty-four hours have been a red-carpet watcher’s dream come true. Last night, Emma Stone hit the Gangster Squad premiere in L.A. in a fresh-off-the-runway—we’re talking not even a day old—Lanvin pre-fall dress, while Jessica Chastain sported an Oscar de la Renta lace confection at the Mama opening in New York. But their combined star power didn’t even come close to besting Kerry Washington, who continues to turn it out on the European leg of the Django Unchained world tour. At a photo call in Berlin this afternoon, the actress sported one of the checkered sheath dresses from the Louis Vuitton Spring collection—and brought the hair look along for the ride; if the side-slung bangs and that perfectly askew bow look familiar, it’s because Guido Palau constructed the same style backstage in Paris, albeit with a swept-up bouffant rather than a back-combed half-up, half-down. Kerry, still killing it. Don’t you agree?
