Kirsten Kjaer Weis has mastered the art of pigments and powders that are 95 percent organic and no less gorgeous for it. Each of the Danish-born, New York-based face painter’s red lacquered grain-textured boxes houses a refillable weighty silver compact made from zamac—an alloy of zinc, aluminum, magnesium, and copper—and we’ll look for any excuse to pull one out for a mid-day touchup. Her new summer collection offers up more than a few. Joining a lovely, sheer reddish coral Cream Blush and a peachy, neon Lip Tint are two eye shadows: Charmed is a foamy taupe and Magnetic is an exquisite chocolate with a steely undertone. Both have a slight sheen to them, and when worn together, they create the perfect neutral palette: After coating lids with Magnetic, brighten brow bones with a bit of Charmed, then slick on a few coats of brown mascara and you should be good to go.
Ever since we first spotted Danish-bred Kjaer Weis cosmetics last summer, we’ve been patiently waiting for a follow-up collection of colors to pop into the eco-brand’s refillable sleek metal compacts. We’re happy to report that the wait is over; the company’s new autumn/winter collection just debuted with four lovely colors. In the eye shadow category, there’s Divine, a silvery pewter that works for day or night depending on how you layer it, and Blue Wonder, a cobalt that’s well suited to being smudged and smoked-out on the lid. For blush, there’s the a new cream formula in Lovely, which is, as the name implies, a very pleasing shade of soft pink that melts into the skin. It happens to serve as a perfect complement to Goddess, a new lip tint in deep burgundy (the cherry-tinged pigment is also deliciously scented with a hint of lemon). As with all of Kjaer Weis’ versatile products, these are made with 95 percent organic ingredients and formulated to work with a variety of skin tones.
Ever since the green beauty movement exploded earlier in the aughts, we’ve been fielding pitches from beauty companies claiming to offer the first real “eco-chic” product range—i.e., that rare collection in which quality natural and organic ingredients combine with uncompromising luxury. We’re often unimpressed, but Kjaer Weis, a new makeup line designed by the Danish-born, New York-based makeup artist Kirsten Kjaer Weis, has jarred us out of complacency. Let’s start from the outside and work our way in: Each compact in the Kjaer Weis line comes encased in a red lacquered grain-textured box that resembles a little jewelry box (a jewelry box of the Cartier variety, if you know your high-end bling-purveyor packaging). Opening said box reveals a weighty silver compact made from zamac, an alloy of zinc, aluminum, magnesium, and copper that makes a clicking sound when the slide function of the lid closes, similar to the noise a classic Mercedes door makes when it shuts, Kjaer Weis says (we’ll take it). The compacts, while beautiful, are not recyclable—but they’re refillable with palettes of cream blush, eye shadow, and lip tint in universally flattering earth tones, all of which are formulated with 95 percent organic ingredients that utilize natural preservatives and pigments. The only things missing are parabens, petrochemical emulsifiers, synthetic colors, and fragrances, which we’re just as happy to do without, thanks.
Kjaer Weis launches exclusively at Space NK beginning in September.
