The Short Story: Karlie Vs. Leighton

We’ve been having a little short-hair envy of late as we grapple with the decision of whether or not to shear off our mid-back-grazing strands into their former asymmetrical bob glory—which is presumably why we were transfixed by Leighton Meester and Karlie Kloss at this week’s Target and Neiman Marcus Holiday Collection launch event. Both women recently went chin-length to much acclaim, although we’re feeling Kloss’ flirty side part and waves a little more than Meester’s slicked-back style. You too?

Kate Hudson Reveals Her True Calling (Spoiler Alert: It’s Face Painting); Why Eating Sweets Is a Good Thing For Your Waist Line; And More…

A Hollywood upbringing earned Kate Hudson more than just a leg up in the biz: Apparently, playing with products from mom Goldie Hawn’s makeup artist’s case as a child gave Hudson an early appreciation for cosmetics, which led her to become an application wiz. The actress and Almay spokeswoman apparently does her own makeup for premieres and often plays face painter to a select group of friends as well. [People]

Vera Wang plans on releasing a flanker to her Leighton Meester-fronted Lovestruck fragrance this summer, and Meester has been enlisted for spokesperson duties again. The Gossip Girl star wears an appropriately floral-printed dress in new ad images for the Champagne, pink peppercorn, marigold, white freesia, and cashmere woods-infused Lovestruck Floral Rush. The FDA Cracks Down On SPF; Kate Middleton (And Her Hairdresser) Are Coming To America; And More…

The FDA’s outdated guidelines for sunscreen labels, which have been in effect since 1978, were just kicked up several notches. A new ruling was passed this week mandating that sunscreens must protect equally against both UVB and UVA rays to be considered “broad spectrum.” What’s more, all “waterproof” and “sweatproof” claims have been banned. A huge step in the right direction to fight skin cancer, but one that should’ve come decades ago, if you ask us. [NYT]

The Duchess of Cambridge is America-bound for an 11-day tour, and while the burgeoning fashion icon is reportedly packing light, she will be bringing at least one heavy accessory. That’d be her trusted hairdresser, James Pryce. If there’s one thing that’ll win over the stateside crowd, it’ll be Middleton’s signature bouncy blow-outs. [Mirror]

Stop the presses: Leighton Meester has cut herself a heavy forehead fringe. A good move, too, if she wants to be taken seriously as a singer. [StyleCaster]

Make it three for Beyoncé. Hot on the heels of her first two fragrances—Heat and Heat Rush—the singer will drop Pulse, a floral citrus eau, in September. [Elle]

Reb’l Fleur Blooms; Vera Wang Is Lovestruck; And More…

At long last, breaking news about Rihanna’s forthcoming fragrance due out this Spring: images of the packaging for Reb’l Fleur, as the tuberose, violet, hibiscus, and coconut water eau is called, have hit the blogosphere! And they are…slightly underwhelming. [Just Jared]

Speaking of long-awaited fragrance news, Leighton Meester has revealed that the name of Vera Wang’s forthcoming perfume is—drum roll please—Lovestruck. [Examiner]

After the tremendous success of its Evan Rachel Wood-fronted women’s flanker, Gucci will be rolling out a men’s version of Guilty this Spring. No word on whether it too will get the Frank Miller-directed cinemercial / MTV Music Awards premiere kind of treatment. [WWD]

The latest addition to Urban Outfitter’s ever-growing beauty arsenal? Clip-on bangs. Made from real human hair and amenable to trimming and heat styling, they’re the perfect accessory for the wannabe hipster on your holiday list. [Blackbook]

What Leighton (Really) Likes; Megan Fox On Film; And More…

When Leighton Meester isn’t washing her hair with Herbal Essences, spritzing herself with Vera Wang perfume, or wearing Missoni (her latest contract coup was announced last week), her routine includes non-contractual obligations like La Roche Posay sunscreens, Mario Badescu Oil-Free Moisturizer, Creme de la Mer hand and body lotion, and lots and lots of yoga. [Allure]

Speaking of contractual obligations, Megan Fox’s first duty as Armani Cosmetics spokesperson is to push its scarlet red lipstick in a new TV commercial that’s making the rounds on the Internet. (Fast forward to 00:27. That’s where she gets you). [Grazia]

New research suggests that the average woman looks more than four years older than her actual age, thanks in large part to modern, unhealthy lifestyles. Even more reason to quit smoking and move to the country asap. [Daily Mail]

With the 10 percent “tan tax” in full effect and the WHO equating tanning beds with carcinogens like cigarettes and arsenic, you’d think that their use would have dramatically dropped off. But you’d be wrong. A new study confirms that 18 percent of women and 6.5 percent of men in America still fake bake. [L.A. Times]
