The Holy Trail

-------

Religious symbols make routine appearances in fashion—most recently in Dolce & Gabbana’s almost all-white Spring collection, and before that at Alexander McQueen and Yves Saint Laurent for Fall, not to mention pretty much every Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy collection ever. Just last month, holy matters worked their way into popular culture as well, with high school singing sitcom Glee devoting an entire episode to the topic, including a particularly rousing version of “Losing My Religion.” Now natural beauty brand Lush is looking to a higher power for olfactory guidance. In-house perfumer Simon Constantine created Breath of God after a trip to Tibet, where he was particularly inspired by the incense used in religious rituals there. The resulting scent, with notes of neroli, melon, jasmine, sandalwood, and musk, launches December 1 and is a multifaceted mingling of smoky and sweet that is equally enticing on men and women. Definitely worship-worthy, and just in time for Midnight Mass.

Lush Debuts a ‘Round-The-Clock Cleanser

-------

The facial cleanser I reach for at night isn’t the one I prefer in the morning. The early hours are reserved for cleansing, but in the evening, makeup removal and moisturizing are my top priorities. Those purposes don’t necessarily converge in one product, which means my bathroom shelf is a bit overcrowded, but Lush’s latest skincare innovation could become my one and only. Made with fragrant exotic Singaporean orchids, softening almond oil, and moisture-rich vitamin A, the 9 to 5 Cleansing Lotion can be used as a traditional wash in the a.m. and then, after dark, tissued off, rather than rinsed, to impart maximum moisturizing benefits. And while Lush’s ingredients may be of the 100 percent natural variety, the formula is powerful enough to remove even the most stubborn makeup. If you call it 9 to 5, it has to be good enough for Dolly Parton, and she certainly isn’t someone who takes a light-handed approach to cosmetics.

Lush’s New Steam Clean

-------

As temperatures linger in the triple digits here in New York, Manhattanites have found themselves trapped in what seems like an outdoor steam room. We prefer to do our sweating in actual indoor steam rooms, thank you very much. And so does Lush. Taking its cues from Finland’s sauna culture, the handmade cosmetics company is launching two new entirely vegan products for the summer that are designed to work with the steam of your shower to draw out and destroy all kinds of nasty toxins lurking beneath your skin’s surface (you know what you did over the holiday weekend). Its Brimstone Body Scrub uses sulfur powder, China clay, and sea salt to increase circulation and unclog pores, while the aptly named Glorious Mud Body Mask—a thick, vanilla-scented, mineral-rich treatment—is meant to dry into a cakey layer before being rinsed off to reveal a seriously smooth finish. Both products bow next week and are good investments, seeing as how the summer swelter has really only just begun.
