Justice Is Served: Free Makeup For All!

-------

You can thank the ruling on a class-action lawsuit for what could legitimately be the best thing that’s happened to you all year: Beginning on January 20 and continuing for one week, $175 million worth of free cosmetics will be doled out at beauty counters across the country while supplies last. According to an article in BusinessWeek, retail giants like Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale’s, Dillard’s, and Macy’s as well as a handful of designer brands including Lancôme, Chanel, Guerlain, and Estée Lauder broke antitrust laws and conspired to fix prices on a number of their products. To pay back customers who may have been affected by the alleged scheme, which reportedly spans almost ten years from 1994 to 2003, anyone who purchased products from these stores is entitled to receive one free item in reparation. Click here for a full list of participating stores and brands and get ready to get yours on Tuesday morning.

Prince, “In Hiding” From Fragrance Moguls

-------

Don’t expect to see Prince making public appearances anytime soon to promote 3121, the unisex fragrance he launched last year. According to New York magazine’s blog The Cut, the Purple One, who apparently signed a contract with the perfume licensing firm Revelations to promote the fragrance in various ways, has gone M.I.A., and as such is being sued by the French company. As far as we’re concerned, though, this is better for business. Part of the singer’s mysterious allure is that he’s not all that accessible. If he were out and about, signing bottles at Macy’s, we’d actually be less likely to purchase his fragrance. His “disappearance” should be viewed as a brilliant marketing scheme that will no doubt increase sales when his next fragrance in the 3121 line hits counters in 2009. At least our interest is piqued.

The Genie’s Got Her Own Bottle

-------

Celebrating her first fragrance to be released outside of Europe, Christina Aguilera will unveil Inspire today at Macy’s, and will be doling out the inspiration in person to a few select fans pulled from a line that is likely already forming in Herald Square (pre-purchase of the fragrance is required to queue up). Apparently conceived out of Aguilera’s love for pop art, the fruity-floral fragrance counts mango, freesia, and Valencia orange flower among its accords and is being touted as “energetic, fun, and colorful”—which is fairly evident from its bejeweled box and pink juice. We’d make a comment about how the pop star needs to hurry up with fragrances two and three in order to upstage Britney Spears’ olfactory franchise, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that Xtina is the better (off) Mouseketeer. No need to add insult to injury.

Christina Aguilera will be at the Macy’s Herald Square location in New York today, beginning at 5 p.m.
