The 411: Marcia Kilgore

-------

Marcia Kilgore is, to put it simply, beauty royalty. After all, she is the brains behind Bliss—first a pioneer, and now a ubiquitous presence, in the spa category. It was in 1996 that the Canadian-born entrepreneur turned her own longtime quest for clear skin into a business that would, in the years since, grow to become a vast empire, which is characterized by no-nonsense, results-driven treatments (like that iconic triple oxygen facial that first earned Kilgore many a celebrity devotee) and those signature baby blue products with the clever names. And Bliss isn’t even the only notch in Kilgore’s beauty belt; she can also lay claim to Soap and Glory, the similarly cheeky London line that reentered the U.S. market at Sephora last summer, and FitFlop! To say that the slender tycoon with the severe blonde bob is beauty obsessed would be an understatement. It goes without saying, then, that compiling her list of favorite primping and preening destinations was just a little bit of a thrill.

The One-Stop Beauty Shop: Sephora
“The original Sephora Soho store is still my favorite stop for beauty products in New York. Not only because I can do a quick ‘sweep’ of the Soap and Glory shelves, but because that strip of Soho brings back a lot of great memories for me.”
555 Broadway New York, NYC, (212) 625-1309.

The Pond-Hopping Face Places: Bliss and Sarah Chapman
“In New York it’s Beata Chyla at Bliss Soho; there’s nobody better. She’s fabulous, kind, thoughtful, extremely thorough, and has a great positive energy. In London I go to Sarah Chapman on Draycott Avenue; she’s the first facialist I didn’t feel the need to correct!”

The Hair Heroes: New York and L.A. Pros
“In New York, I generally beg for a last-minute appointment between receptionists at Garren and Yves Durif at the Carlyle. In London, it’s Kevin Moss at John Frieda, then Josh at Josh Wood Atelier or Daniel at Daniel Galvin for color.”

Soap & Glory Crosses The Pond—Again

-------

Marcia Kilgore, the genius behind Bliss Spas and FitFlop, introduced Soap & Glory as a Target exclusive back in 2007. With names like Sexy Mother Pucker (a plumping lip shine) and the Greatest Scrub of All (a facial exfoliator), the reasonably priced, sassy English import was an instant hit. But then it mysteriously disappeared from Target stores, and getting your hands on Kilgore’s addictive Righteous Butter required a trip to London. “We really had no real choice but to break up with them,” Kilgore jokes, referring to Target’s inability to keep her product on shelves and customers happy. For her second shot at the U.S. market, she’s partnering up with a very different retail behemoth: Sephora. The luxury beauty destination just launched the entire Soap & Glory collection on its Web site this week, with a full in-store rollout planned for September. And it’s about time, too: A good Glow Job—that’s the brand’s daily radiance-boosting moisturizer—is hard to find.

Primping Picks From Madonna’s Material Girl; Suri Cruise: Beauty Queen; And More…

-------

Lourdes Leon may now have her own beauty line to cull from with the cosmetics expansion of Material Girl, but when she wants a classic crimson lip, she pulls out the big guns: MAC’s cult favorite, Russian Red. [StyleList]

Marcia Kilgore’s Soap & Glory beauty line is launching in Sephora stores stateside in September, but it has already found success in the Hamburg retail chain Douglas. To thank the German people for their embrace of the brand, Kilgore commissioned artist Oliver Voss to create a giant female bather sculpture, which has been placed in the city’s Alster Lake. We can’t wait to see what she comes up with for the Hudson. [WWD]

Mexican beauty queen Cynthia de la Vega made headlines today when the Nuestra Belleza Mexico pageant stripped her of her title due to what the organizers term a “lack of dedication and discipline.” Translation: De la Vega refused to follow a prescribed diet when she put on a little extra weight. Ouch. [Daily Mail]

Dieting shouldn’t be an issue for burgeoning beauty queen Suri Cruise. The trim five-year-old is reportedly obsessed with TLC’s Toddlers & Tiaras and is considering entering the child beauty pageant circuit. [Now Magazine]
