Beauty Souvenirs from the City of Lights

-------

French drugstore finds

In addition to Balmain’s Texturizing Salt Spray and the multiple bottles of Créaline Bioderma makeup remover I’m lugging home this season, I found a few other French beauty gems worthy of space in my suitcase—all from la pharmacie (which is far more fun to peruse in Paris than your standard CVS).

Diadermine Lingettes Démaquillantes Express 3 en 1: Recommended to me by a Parisian friend who has used them for as long as she’s worn makeup, these wipes smell like a milder version of the classic cloths designed for babies’ bottoms. The alcohol-free towelettes remove any traces of color from your face, eyes, and lips, but leave skin feeling soft—not stripped.

Savons Gemme: On the hunt for flu medicine (after posting about Pat McGrath’s cure-all, naturally I contracted her cough and high fever myself), I spotted these geodelike soaps near the checkout. They instantly reminded me of Phillip Lim’s geology-inspired collection, and at €18 each, these one-of-a-kind bars infused with jojoba, olive and almond oils are far more budget-friendly than the delicately embroidered jacket I’ve been lusting after from the aforementioned designer.

Marvis Toothpaste in Jasmin Mint: Yes, if you search long and hard in the States you can find the occasional tube. In France, however, the brand is as readily available as Crest. After squeezing the last bits out of my travel-sized Colgate, I was happy to replace it with this floral-scented formula that tastes surprisingly more refreshing than it sounds.

The 411: Susien Chong Of Lover

-------

Susien-ChongLover, the Aussie brand started by couple Susien Chong and Nic Briand, has, since launching as a stall in Bondi Market in 2001, cultivated an ardent following among fashion types thanks in great part to the line’s consistent and clear identity. They are the forebearers of an aesthetic that we’ve come to think of as “new romantic”—endless swaths of dense French laces and silks (plus, in their forthcoming Fall/Winter Chorus collection, some seriously gorgeous leather) combined with sharp, thoughtful tailoring. Lover’s signature femininity and playful irreverence has made it a favorite of not just the editorial set, but also famous style heavyweights like Michelle Williams, Alexa Chung, and the inimitable Miss Kim Gordon. Here Chong, who happens to be as preternaturally cool as the women who favor her clothing, shares what’s in her own beauty and wellness toolbox.

The Escape: Qualia, Hamilton Island, Great Barrier Reef
“My partner Nic and I escaped to this oasis in March and experienced the ultimate luxury getaway. Our private villa was perched right in the bushland amongst exotic local flora and fauna and came complete with our own private infinity pool and uninterrupted views of the reef. We cried the day we had to leave but vowed to make it a regular yearly escape.”

The Jogging Path: Central Park
“Central Park shot right to the top of my list of running locations on a recent trip to New York. Peace and tranquility are not words that usually spring to my mind about New York, but it does exist here! I like to head to the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir; the gravel surface is a little softer on the knees than tarmac. Watching the ducks paddle by whilst the sun rises is pure magic!”

The Mani Haven: Bellissimo Nails & Spa
“This salon has a killer hand massage that comes with manicures and pedicures, plus an impossible selection of colors to choose from.”
125 Fourth Ave., NYC, (212) 677-2392

The Yoga Studio: Yoga Vida
“I recently became obsessed with their ‘FLOW’ Vinyasa classes, which are an amazing workout. For those who are musically minded, the fun starts on the weekend with classes that have a live music accompaniment—that’s right, flute and sax to help get your yoga groove on.”
666 Broadway, NYC, www.yogavida.com

The Skincare Cult Favorite: Clarisonic
“I’m a new convert to the cult of the Clarisonic. I especially like the Clarisonic Plus, which has a bonus brush for buffing the body. Goodbye dry elbows, heels, and knees!”
Available at www.clarisonic.com.

The Dental Routine: Marvis
“I got hooked on the minty taste of their toothpaste after staying at the Bowery Hotel recently, and the old-school packaging sits pretty in our bathroom cabinet.”
Available at www.marvismint.com.

The Must-Have Supplement: Powdered Magnesium
“They are a must for me. Great for boosting the system and to help get over fatigue, migraines, and insomnia!”
Available at www.vitaminshoppe.com.

The In-Flight Essential: Sodashi Calming Rose Face Mist
“I was recently converted to this brand after staying at Qualia. The all-natural, chemical-free Australian product line feels incredible on your skin—the mist is great for staying hydrated throughout the day and on long-haul flights.”
Available at www.sodashi.com.
