Super Bowl Super Strands: A Face-Off

By all accounts, last night’s Super Bowl halftime show was epic. Madonna? Check. Givenchy couture? Check. Cameos from Nicki Minaj and MIA? Check, check. Prince’s 2007 Super Bowl performance will forever rank as our favorite, but we can admit that Madonna legitimately killed it—with one hell of a beauty look to boot. Madge’s go-to glam squad of makeup artist Gina Brooke and hairstylist Andy LeCompte traveled to Indianapolis with the material girl to provide complexion perfection, glittering bronze lids, and a serious set of thick, honey gold ringlets that reminded us of a certain Italian Vogue editor. So, for a little compare-and-contrast fun, we give you Madonna in Givenchy and Franca Sozanni in Gucci. Who rocks long, middle-parted curls better?

Botox: Officially Not Just For Wrinkles Anymore; Glee, The Fragrance?; And More

Attention, headache sufferers: Botox has officially been approved by the FDA as a treatment for migraines. Look out for its other off-label uses, which include injections for hair loss and chronic sweating, to become equally lawful in the coming months. (Silk shirt wearers, rejoice.) [NPR]

Another day, another beauty-centric iPhone app. The Ugly Meter analyzes facial images captured on any portable Apple device to determine physical attractiveness on a scale of 1 to 10. We’ll download it, but if we’re anything below a 7 we’re demanding a refund. [msnbc]

In a somewhat controversial move, M.I.A. wore a printed burka to the Spike TV Scream Awards this weekend, adding an equally contentious beauty look to the equation. Hey, if only your eyes are visible, why not paint them with glittering aqua shadow, no? [Daily Mail]

First Justin Bieber, now Katy Perry. The California Gurl has collaborated on a new nail polish collection with OPI due out in January, adding yet another beauty endorsement to her growing list of primping products. [Teen Vogue]

And speaking of celebrity-branded beauty, the rumor mill is churning with news that Glee star Lea Michele is next in line for a signature scent. [Coco Perez]

M.I.A.’s Orange Crush

M.I.A. is no stranger to statement beauty looks—need we remind you of her countless nail experiments, including, but not limited to, those gold-foiled fingers and tips at the Met gala this year? When she’s not dabbling in Minx overlays, she’s focusing her energies on a series of bold matte lips that tend to vacillate between shades of fuchsia and red. But at Nylon magazine’s Music Issue launch party last night, it was all about the orange pout, which the singer paired with some smudged black liner and a few coats of mascara. The color reminds us of MAC Cosmetics’ popular Morange amplified cream lipstick. It happens to look fantastic with denim-on-denim ensembles and tons of gold accessories, don’t you think?

M.I.A. Goes As Goldfinger

Thank God for M.I.A. Were it not for her ever-present devotion to the statement nail—in this case, gold foil overlays accompanied by those gilded, Chinese-finger-trap-style adornments—we would’ve drowned in a sea of creamy nude and “edgy” black lacquers at the Met last night. Also, we have a deep respect for her commitment to the orange lip. Loving what she’s doing.

M.I.A. Nails It

M.I.A. is hip-hop all the way. Case in point: While Eva Mendes, Camilla Belle, and Jessica Alba wore frilly, daytime-appropriate dresses to the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund event at the Chateau Marmont this weekend, the “Paper Planes” singer opted for lots of black leather and over-the-knee boots. On her nails: a white basket weave print that looks like a design from the highly anticipated new collection of Minx nail overlays. The line is due out later this month but has already been given to a handful of famous fans for a trial run. Ah, the perks of celebrity. Thoughts on her precision tips?
