Beauty 411: Clare Vivier’s Must-Have Candle, Lip Balm, and More

clare-vivierDesigner Clare Vivier’s career was born out of need—specifically, a personal need. While working as a journalist in France in the mid-aughts, she was unable to find a laptop case that married fashion and function. So she set about to create one herself, taking style cues aplenty from the timeless French design elements that surrounded her. And thus was born her eponymous bag line, which has, in the years since, established itself as a resource for those in search of exquisitely constructed but resolutely minimal bags—her classic fold-over clutch can be spotted tucked under many a cool-girl arm. Vivier, who besides a design career also snagged a husband while in France, now calls L.A. home, and it’s there that all of her bags are exclusively constructed and where she opened her flagship in Silverlake in 2012. (She opened a New York store in Nolita last year.) Here, the bag guru talks beauty.

THE NAIL GO-TO: Olive & June
“I don’t have as much time for mani/pedis as I would like, and mostly I stop at any neighborhood nail salon. But when I do have time, it is a real treat to go to Olive & June. It’s such a beautiful breath of fresh air in the middle of Beverly Hills.”

THE CREAM ROUTINE: Weleda and Decléor
“The natural skincare movement is huge right now in L.A., and I love that these Weleda skin creams are sans parabens and sulfates. I use three of the day creams: Rose, Iris, and Pomegranate. My skin tends to dry out from all of the traveling I do, so at night I use the Decléor Aroma Night Balm. This super-rich [formula] always soothes [my complexion] with the richest oils, and I love the calming scent.”

THE LIPSTICK MOOD LIFTER: Ilia Lipstick in Perfect Day
“Running from the studio to events and dinners can make for a long day—nothing works better as a pick-me-up like this shade from Ilia. It’s gotten me quite excited for spring.”

THE HAIR TEAM: Leanne and Lisa
“I’m lucky enough to call these two talents my friends as well as my stylists. They work magic on my hair every time…though I must admit that I took scissors to my hair myself this last time.”

“I became so addicted to Rodin’s luxe lip balm that I decided I had to sell it in my stores. It’s perfect for every day and gives me the sleekest sheen on my lips.”

“Cold-pressed juices are pretty much a part of our lives here, so we have some good choices. And we are very lucky to have The Juice very close to our studio in Atwater for when I need a pick-me-up or a liquid meal. And the girls in the studio love it for a healthy afternoon fix.”

THE DESKTOP ACCESSORY: Avène Thermal Spring Water
“I travel to France quite often, and when I do, I always bring back a few Avène Thermal Spring Water sprays. It’s a staple on my desk at the office, and my son loves the feeling of a quick spritz right after school.”

THE SIGNATURE SCENT: Chateau Marmont candle
“Whenever I’m having a dinner party, nothing sets the scene quite like this Chateau Marmont candle. The mix of floral and spices is so enticing, and subtly reminds me of the iconic L.A. hotel.”

California Beauty Dreamin’

Olive & June
In the age of accent nails, airbrush art, and pierced tips, service often stands second in the pursuit of the perfect (and Instagram-worthy) polish job. But Olive & June—the latest nail destination to open in Beverly Hills—is going back to basics by elevating the salon experience for the modern set. Aimed at filling the void between the hole-in-the-wall quickie shops and more time-intensive spas, Olive & June owner Sarah Gibson Tuttle teamed up with TENOVERSIX‘s beloved retailers-turned-designers, Brady Cunningham and Kristen Lee, to conceive an inviting and fully functional space. The pair, who in the past created their own nail color, Blonde on Blonde, for RGB, worked with Tuttle to blend the interior design and merchandising of the product on display. The result is an airy, California-inspired space that feeds Tuttle’s New Yorker-turned-Angeleno aesthetic. Locally made custom furniture provides a seamless transition from reception area to nail station, while a pristine wall of lacquers prominently displays an eye-catching assortment of RGB, NARS, Butter London, and other fresh hues. And true to their promise, the nail salon also takes great care to cater to your every modern-day convenience. Once you’ve safely stowed your keys and bag, iPads and Wi-Fi are at your disposal. Mani trends might come and go, but the comfort of a well-conceived salon experience never gets old.
